Chapter: The legal way of Al-Udhiya

Sahih al-Bukhari 5545

Narrated Al-Bara:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said on the day of Id-al-Adha, “The first thing we will do on this day of ours is to offer the (‘Id) prayer and then return to slaughter the sacrifice. Whoever does so has acted according to our Sunnah, and whoever slaughtered before the prayer, what he offered was just meat for his family and will not be considered a sacrifice.” Upon hearing that, Abu Burda bin Niyar said, “I have got a six-month-old ram.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Slaughter it, but it will not be sufficient for anyone else after you.” Al-Bara added: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever slaughtered the sacrifice after the prayer, he slaughtered it at the right time and followed the tradition of the Muslims.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5546

Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever slaughtered the sacrifice before the prayer, he slaughtered it for himself, and whoever slaughtered it after the prayer, he slaughtered it at the right time and followed the tradition of the Muslims.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5547

Narrated Uqba bin Amir Al-Juhani:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) distributed among his companions some animals for sacrifice on Id-al-Adha. Uqba’s share was a six-month-old goat. He said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! My share is a six-month-old ram.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Slaughter it as a sacrifice.”

Chapter: Sacrifices on behalf of travelers and women

Sahih al-Bukhari 5548

Narrated Aisha:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) entered upon me when I had my menses at Sarif before entering Mecca, and I was weeping. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “What is wrong with you? Have you got your period?” She said, “Yes.” He said, “This is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam, so perform all the rites of Hajj except the Tawaf around the Ka‘ba.” Aisha added: When we were at Mina, beef was brought to me, and I asked, “What is this?” They said, “Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) has slaughtered some cows as sacrifices on behalf of his wives.”

Chapter: Meat is desired on the day of Nahr

Sahih al-Bukhari 5549

Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said on the day of Nahr, “Whoever has slaughtered his sacrifice before the prayer should repeat it.” A man said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! This is a day on which meat is desired, and I have a six-month-old ram that is better to me than two sheep.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) allowed him to slaughter it, but I do not know whether that permission was valid for others or not. The Prophet (peace be upon him) then went towards two rams and slaughtered them, and the people went towards their sheep and distributed them among themselves.

Chapter: Sacrifices on the day of Nahr

Sahih al-Bukhari 5550

Narrated Abu Bakra:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Time has come back to its original state which it had on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, four of which are sacred: three are in succession—Dhul-Qa‘da, Dhul-Hijja, and Muharram—and Rajab of Mudar which is between Jumada and Sha‘ban. The Prophet (peace be upon him) then asked, ‘Which month is this?’ We said, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He kept silent until we thought he would name it differently. He said, ‘Isn’t it Dhul-Hijja?’ We said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Which town is this?’ We said, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He kept silent again, then said, ‘Isn’t it the sacred town (Mecca)?’ We said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘What day is this?’ We said, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He kept silent again, then said, ‘Isn’t it the day of Nahr?’ We said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Indeed, your blood, your properties, and your honor are as sacred to one another as this day of yours in this town of yours in this month of yours. You will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. So do not go astray after me by killing each other. Those who are present should convey this message to those who are absent, for some who are told may understand it better than those who heard it directly.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) then said, ‘Have I not conveyed the message? Have I not conveyed the message?'”

My uncle, Abu Burda, slaughtered his sacrifice before the Id prayer. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said to him, “Your slaughtered sheep is just mutton.” Abu Burda said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! I have a domestic young goat.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Slaughter it as a sacrifice, but it will not be sufficient for anyone other than you.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) added, “Whoever slaughtered his sacrifice before the prayer has done so only for himself, and whoever slaughtered it after the prayer has completed his sacrifice and followed the tradition of the Muslims.”

I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) delivering a sermon on the Day of Eid, saying, “The first thing we will do on this day of ours is to offer the Eid prayer, then we will return and slaughter our sacrifices. Whoever does this has followed our tradition, and whoever slaughtered before the prayer, it was just meat he offered to his family, and it was not a sacrifice.” Abu Burda got up and said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! I slaughtered before the prayer and I have a young goat better than an old sheep.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Slaughter it to make up for that, but it will not be sufficient for anyone else after you.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) seemed to accept his excuse. The man said, “I have a young goat better than two sheep.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) allowed him to slaughter it. But I do not know whether this permission was general or specific. The Prophet (peace be upon him) then went towards two rams and slaughtered them, and the people went towards their sheep and slaughtered them.

One day Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) offered the Eid prayer and said, “Whoever offers our prayer and faces our Qibla should not slaughter until he finishes the Eid prayer.” Abu Burda bin Niyar said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! I have already done it.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “That is something you did before its due time.” Abu Burda said, “I have a young goat better than two old sheep; shall I slaughter it?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Yes, but it will not be sufficient for anyone after you.”

There is a man who sends a Hadi (sacrificial animal) to the Ka‘ba and stays in his city, requesting that his Hadi be garlanded, and he remains in a state of Ihram from that day until the people finish their Ihram. What do you say about it?” Masruq added, “I heard the clapping of her hands behind the curtain, and she said, ‘I used to twist the garlands for the Hadi of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), and he used to send his Hadi to the Ka‘ba, but he never considered unlawful what was lawful for men regarding their wives until the people returned from Hajj.’”

Chapter: What may be eaten of the meat of sacrifices and what may be taken as journey food

Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5567

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah:
During the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him), we used to take with us the meat of the sacrifices (of Eid al-Adha) to Medina. The narrator often said, “The meat of the Hadi.”

Narrated Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri:
Once he was not present at the time of Eid al-Adha, and when he came, some meat was presented to him and the people said, “This is the meat of our sacrifices.” He said, “Take it away; I shall not taste it.” Then he went to his brother, Abu Qatada (who was his maternal brother and one of the warriors of Badr), and mentioned that to him. Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5569

Narrated Salama bin Al-Akwa’:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever has slaughtered a sacrifice should not keep anything of its meat after three days.” When it was the next year, the people said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5570

Narrated Aisha:
We used to salt some of the meat of the sacrifice and present it to the Prophet (peace be upon him) at Medina. Once he said, “Do not eat of that meat for more than three days.” That was not a final order, but that year he wanted us to feed of it to others. Allah knows best.

Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5571

Narrated Abu Ubaid, the freed slave of Ibn Azhar:
He witnessed the Day of Eid al-Adha with Umar bin Al-Khattab. Umar offered the Eid prayer before the sermon and then addressed the people, saying, “O people! Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) has forbidden you to fast on the first day of each of these two Eids, for one of them is the Day of breaking your fast, and the other is the day on which you eat the meat of your sacrifices.”

Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5572

Narrated Abu Ubaid:
Then I witnessed the Eid with Uthman bin Affan, and that was on a Friday. He offered the prayer before the sermon and said, “O people! Today you have two Eids together, so whoever among those who live at Al-Awali would like to wait for the Jumu’a prayer may wait, and whoever would like to return (home) is granted permission to do so.”

Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5573

Narrated Abu Ubaid:
Then I witnessed the Eid with Ali bin Abi Talib, and he also offered the Eid prayer before the sermon and then delivered the sermon before the people, saying, “Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) has forbidden you to eat the meat of your sacrifices for more than three days.”
