Chapter: Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you with

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5373

Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash‘ari: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Give food to the hungry, pay a visit to the sick, and release (set free) the one in captivity (by paying his ransom).”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5374

Narrated Abu Huraira: The family of Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not eat their fill for three successive days till he died.

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5375

Narrated Abu Huraira: Once while I was in a state of fatigue because of severe hunger, I met ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab and asked him to recite a verse from Allah’s Book to me. He entered his house and interpreted it to me. After walking a short distance, I fell on my face due to hunger. Suddenly I saw Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) standing by my head. He said, “O Abu Huraira!” I replied, “Labbaik, O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)!” He took me by the hand, made me get up, and took me to his house. He ordered a big bowl of milk for me. I drank, and he said, “Drink more, O Abu Hirr!” I drank again until my belly was full and looked like a bowl. Later, I told ‘Umar what had happened and said, “Someone more deserving than you, O ‘Umar, took care of me.” ‘Umar said, “By Allah, if I had entertained you, it would have been dearer to me than owning red camels.”

Chapter: Mention the Name of Allah on starting to eat, and eat with the right hand

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5376

Narrated ‘Umar bin Abi Salama: I was a boy under the care of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and my hand used to go around the dish while I was eating. So Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said to me, “O boy! Mention the Name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearer to you.” Since then, I have followed these instructions whenever eating.

Chapter: To eat of the dish what is nearer to you

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5377

Narrated ‘Umar bin Abi Salama: Once I ate a meal with Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), and I was eating from all sides of the dish. So Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said to me, “Eat from what is nearer to you.”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5378

Narrated Wahb bin Kaisan Abi Nu‘aim: A meal was brought to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) while his step-son, ‘Umar bin Abi Salama, was with him. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said to him, “Mention the Name of Allah and eat from what is nearer to you.”

Chapter: Eating from around the dish while taking meal with someone else

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5379

Narrated Anas bin Malik: A tailor invited Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) to a meal he had prepared. I went with him and saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) seeking to eat the pieces of gourd from the various sides of the dish. Since that day, I have liked to eat gourd. ‘Umar bin Abi Salama said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to me, “Eat with your right hand.”

Chapter: To eat with right hand, and to start with the right side in doing other things

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5380

Narrated ‘Aisha: The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to love to start doing things from the right side whenever possible — in performing ablution, putting on his shoes, and combing his hair. (Al-Ash‘ath said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to do so in all his affairs.)

Chapter: Whoever ate till he was satisfied

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5381

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Abu Talha said to Um Sulaim, “I have heard the voice of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) which was feeble, and I think that he is hungry. Have you got something to eat?” She took out some barley bread, wrapped it, and sent me with it to the Prophet (peace be upon him). I found him in the mosque with some people. He said, “Has Abu Talha sent you with food?” I said, “Yes.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to those with him, “Get up!” and they all went with him. Abu Talha became worried as the food was little, but Um Sulaim said, “Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) know best.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) entered and said, “O Um Sulaim! Bring what you have.” He blessed the food and said, “Admit ten people.” They ate and left full. He continued admitting ten more each time until eighty people had eaten their fill.

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5382

Narrated ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr: We were one hundred and thirty men sitting with the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Has anyone of you any food?” One man had a small amount of dough. Then a tall pagan came driving some sheep. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, “Will you sell us a sheep or give it as a gift?” He said, “I will sell it.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) bought a sheep, and it was cooked. The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered that parts of it be roasted, and by Allah, each of the one hundred and thirty men had a share. The Prophet (peace be upon him) kept portions for those absent, and after all had eaten, there was still food left in the two trays, which I carried on the camel.
