Did you hear that from Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)?” He said, “No, it is from my own self.”

Once I set out to visit Umar bin Al-Khattab. While I was sitting there with him, his gatekeeper Yarfa came and said, “Uthman, Abdur-Rahman bin Awf, Az-Zubair, and Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas are seeking permission to meet you.” Umar said, “Yes,” and they entered and sat down. After a short while Yarfa came again and said, “Shall I admit Ali and Abbas?” Umar said, “Yes.” They entered and Abbas said, “O Chief of the Believers! Judge between me and this man (Ali).” The others said, “O Chief of the Believers! Judge between them and relieve one from the other.” Umar said, “Wait! I beseech you by Allah, by Whose permission both the Heaven and the Earth stand fast! Do you know that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, ‘We, the Prophets, do not bequeath anything to our heirs; whatever we leave is to be given in charity’? And by that, Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) meant himself?” They said, “He did say so.” Umar then turned towards Ali and Abbas and said, “Do you both know that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said that?” They said, “Yes.” Umar said, “Allah favored His Apostle with some of this property which He did not give to anybody else. Allah said: ‘And what Allah has bestowed on His Apostle (as Fai booty)…’ So this property was especially granted to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him). But by Allah, he neither withheld it from you nor kept it for himself but distributed it among you until only this remained. From it, Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) used to provide his family with their yearly needs, and whatever remained he would spend where Allah’s property used to be spent. When Allah took His Apostle unto Him, Abu Bakr said, ‘I am the successor of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him),’ and he took charge of that property, doing with it as Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) did. When Abu Bakr died, I said, ‘I am the successor of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr.’ I managed it for two years as they had done. Then you both came to me with the same claim. I said, ‘If you wish, I will hand it over to you on condition that you both promise to manage it in the same way as Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), Abu Bakr, and I have done; otherwise, do not speak to me about it.’ You both agreed, and I handed it over to you. Now, if you cannot manage it, return it to me and I will manage it for you.”

We wanted to get up on his arrival but he said, ‘Stay where you are.’ Then he came and sat between me and her and I felt the coldness of his feet on my abdomen. He said, ‘Shall I direct you to something better than what you have requested? Otherwise, he would say to the Muslims present, “Offer the funeral prayer for your companion.” But when Allah granted the Prophet (peace be upon him) victory, he said, “I am closer to the believers than themselves. We have heard that you wish to marry Durra, the daughter of Abu Salama.” He said, “You mean the daughter of Um Salama?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “Even if she were not my stepdaughter, she would still be unlawful for me, for she is my foster niece.
