It was revealed for the first time when Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) had consummated his marriage with Zainab bint Jahsh.

When the day dawned, the Prophet (peace be upon him) was a bridegroom and he invited the people to a banquet, so they came, ate, and then all left except a few who remained with the Prophet (peace be upon him) for a long time. The Prophet (peace be upon him) got up and went out, and I too went out with him so that those people might leave too. The Prophet (peace be upon him) proceeded and so did I, till he came to the threshold of Aisha’s dwelling place. Then thinking that these people had left by then, he returned, and so did I along with him till he entered upon Zainab, and behold, they were still sitting and had not gone.

So the Prophet (peace be upon him) again went away and I went away along with him. When we reached the threshold of Aisha’s dwelling place, he thought that they had left, and so he returned and I too returned along with him and found those people had left. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) drew a curtain between me and him, and the verses of Al-Hijab were revealed.

Beware! All of you are guardians and all of you are responsible for your wards.”

Chapter: To treat the family in a polite and kind manner

Sahih al-Bukhari 5189

Narrated Aisha:
Eleven women sat together and agreed not to conceal anything about their husbands. The first said, “My husband is like the meat of a weak camel placed on the top of a mountain, which is neither easy to climb nor fat enough to be worth the effort.” The second said, “I shall not talk about my husband, for I fear I may not finish describing his faults.” The third said, “My husband, the too-tall! If I describe him, he will divorce me, and if I keep silent, he will keep me hanging.” The fourth said, “My husband is like the pleasant night of Tihama: neither hot nor cold; I am neither afraid of him nor dissatisfied with him.” The fifth said, “My husband, when entering, is like a leopard (sleeps much), and when going out, is like a lion (boasts much). He does not inquire about what goes on in the house.” The sixth said, “If my husband eats, he finishes everything; if he drinks, he leaves nothing; if he sleeps, he wraps himself in our covers; and he does not touch me to ask how I am.” The seventh said, “My husband is foolish and full of defects. He may hurt you in the head or the body—or both.” The eighth said, “My husband is gentle to the touch like a rabbit and smells like a Zarnab (a good-smelling herb).” The ninth said, “My husband is a tall, generous man, with a long sword strap. His ashes are abundant (meaning he is generous to guests) and his home is near the people.” The tenth said, “My husband is Malik, and what is Malik? Malik is greater than all I could describe. Most of his camels stay at home, ready for guests, and only a few are taken to graze. When they hear the tambourine, they know they will be slaughtered for guests.”

The eleventh said, “My husband is Abu Zar. What is Abu Zar? He has adorned me with jewelry until my ears are heavy, and my arms have grown plump. He found me among poor shepherds and brought me to a respected family with horses and camels. Whatever I say, he never rebukes me. When I sleep, I sleep until morning; when I drink, I drink to my fill. The mother of Abu Zar—how generous was she! Her house was spacious and her provisions abundant. The son of Abu Zar—his bed was narrow, and the arm of a young goat sufficed him. The daughter of Abu Zar—obedient to her parents, her figure aroused jealousy. The slave girl of Abu Zar—she kept our secrets and maintained our home well.”

She added, “One day, Abu Zar went out and saw a woman with two sons like two leopards playing at her breast, so he divorced me and married her. After that, I married a noble man who gave me many animals and said, ‘Eat, O Um Zar, and give to your relatives.’ Yet, all he gave me could not fill the smallest utensil of Abu Zar’s.”

Aisha then said: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said to me, “I am to you as Abu Zar was to his wife Um Zar.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5190

Narrated Urwa:

Chapter: Advice to a daughter regarding her husband

Sahih al-Bukhari 5191

Narrated Ibn Abbas:
I had long wished to ask Umar bin Al-Khattab about the two ladies from among the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) regarding whom Allah said: “If you two turn in repentance to Allah, your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet likes).” When Umar performed Hajj and I did the same, I accompanied him. On the way, he went aside to relieve himself, and I followed him carrying a tumbler of water. When he finished, I poured water over his hands and he performed ablution. I then said, “O Chief of the Believers! Who were the two wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) about whom Allah said this verse?” He said, “How strange of you, Ibn Abbas! They were Aisha and Hafsa.”

Umar continued: “I and an Ansari neighbor of mine from Bani Umaiyya bin Zaid used to visit the Prophet (peace be upon him) alternately—one day he would go, and the next I would. When I went, I would bring him the news of what happened that day, and when he went, he would do the same. We, the people of Quraish, used to have control over our wives, but when we came to live among the Ansar, we found their women dominating their husbands, so our women began learning their ways. I shouted at my wife, and she retorted. I disapproved of her answering back. She said, ‘Why are you surprised? The wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) also answer him back, and some may even stay away from him the whole day.’ This alarmed me, so I went to Hafsa and said, ‘Does anyone of you make the Prophet (peace be upon him) angry until night?’ She said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘You are ruined! Do you not fear that Allah may get angry for the anger of His Messenger (peace be upon him), and thus you would be destroyed? Don’t ask him for more, don’t reply to him, and don’t stay away from him. Ask me for what you need, and do not be deceived by your neighbor (Aisha), for she is more beautiful and beloved to the Prophet (peace be upon him) than you.’”

Umar added: “At that time, people were spreading the rumor that the tribe of Ghassan was preparing to attack us. My Ansari neighbor returned one night, knocked violently at my door, and said, ‘A great thing has happened!’ I asked, ‘Have the Ghassan come?’ He said, ‘No, but something greater—the Prophet (peace be upon him) has divorced his wives!’ I exclaimed, ‘Hafsa is ruined!’ I thought this would happen. I dressed quickly, offered the morning prayer, and went to the Prophet (peace be upon him), who had withdrawn to an upper room. Hafsa was weeping. I asked, ‘Did the Prophet (peace be upon him) divorce you?’ She said, ‘I don’t know; he is alone in the room.’ I went to the pulpit, sat with people weeping there, but could not endure it. So I went to the Prophet (peace be upon him)’s servant and asked for permission to enter. He returned saying, ‘I mentioned you to him, but he kept silent.’ I went back twice more, and the third time, the servant came and said, ‘He has given you permission.’

I entered and saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) lying on a mat made of palm leaves, which had left marks on his side. There was only a leather pillow stuffed with fibers. I said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger! Have you divorced your wives?’ He said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘Allahu Akbar!’ Then I said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), we used to control our women, but when we came to Medina, we found the men dominated by their wives.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) smiled. I added, ‘I went to Hafsa and told her not to imitate Aisha, for she is more beautiful and beloved to you than you.’ He smiled again. Then I looked around and saw nothing in his house except three animal hides. I said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), ask Allah to make your followers prosperous, for the Persians and Romans live in comfort despite their disbelief.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) sat up and said, ‘Are you still of that opinion, O son of Al-Khattab? Those people have received their rewards in this world.’ I said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), ask Allah to forgive me.’”

Umar added: “The Prophet (peace be upon him) kept away from his wives for twenty-nine days because of the story Hafsa had disclosed to Aisha. He had said, ‘I will not enter upon them for a month,’ due to his anger, but after twenty-nine days, he first entered upon Aisha. She said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), you swore not to enter for a month, yet only twenty-nine days have passed.’ He replied, ‘The month is twenty-nine days.’ Then Allah revealed the verses giving the wives the choice, and Aisha chose him. All the others made the same choice.”

Chapter: To be unthankful to the husband

Sahih al-Bukhari 5197

Narrated Abdullah bin Abbas:
During the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him), the sun eclipsed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) offered the eclipse prayer, and so did the people along with him. He performed a long standing posture during which Surat al-Baqara could have been recited, then a prolonged bowing, then raised his head and stood again for a long time, though slightly shorter than the first. He again bowed for a long time, but shorter than the first, then stood and prostrated. After the sun cleared, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death or birth of anyone. So when you see the eclipse, remember Allah.”

The people said, “O Messenger of Allah, we saw you reaching for something and then stepping back.” He said, “I saw Paradise, and I stretched my hand to pluck a bunch of grapes. If I had taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remained. Then I saw the Fire, and I have never seen a more terrifying sight. I saw that the majority of its inhabitants were women.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah! Why is that?” He replied, “Because of their ungratefulness.” It was asked, “Do they disbelieve in Allah?” He said, “They are ungrateful to their husbands and ungrateful for favors. Even if you treat one of them well all her life, when she sees something she dislikes, she says, ‘I have never seen any good from you.’”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5219

Some lady said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! My husband has another wife, so is it sinful of me to claim that he has given me what he has not given me (in order to tease her)?” Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “The one who pretends that he has been given what he has not been given is just like the one who wears two garments of falsehood.”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5220

Narrated `Abdullah bin Masud:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “There is none having a greater sense of Ghira than Allah. And for that He has forbidden the doing of evil actions (illegal sexual intercourse etc.). There is none who likes to be praised more than Allah does.”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5221

Narrated `Aisha:

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “O followers of Muhammad! There is none who has a greater sense of Ghira (self-respect) than Allah, so He has forbidden that His slave commits illegal sexual intercourse or His slave girl commits illegal sexual intercourse. O followers of Muhammad! If you but knew what I know, you would laugh less and weep more!”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5222

5224

Narrated Asma’ bint Abu Bakr:

When Az-Zubair married me, he had no real property or any slave or anything else except a camel which drew water from the well, and his horse. I used to feed his horse with fodder, draw water, sew the bucket for drawing it, and prepare the dough, but I did not know how to bake bread. Our Ansari neighbors used to bake bread for me, and they were honorable ladies. I used to carry the date stones on my head from Zubair’s land given to him by Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), and this land was two-thirds Farsakh (about two miles) from my house. One day, while I was coming with the date stones on my head, I met Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) along with some Ansari people. He called me and, directing his camel to kneel down, said, “Ikh! Ikh!” so as to make me ride behind him. I felt shy to travel with the men and remembered Az-Zubair and his sense of Ghira, as he was one of those people who had the greatest sense of Ghira. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) noticed that I felt shy, so he proceeded. I came to Az-Zubair and said, “I met Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) while I was carrying a load of date stones on my head, and he had some companions with him. He made his camel kneel down so that I might ride, but I felt shy in his presence and remembered your sense of Ghira.” On that, Az-Zubair said, “By Allah, your carrying the date stones (and you being seen by the Prophet in such a state) is more shameful to me than your riding with him.” I continued serving in this way until Abu Bakr sent me a servant to look after the horse, whereupon I felt as if he had set me free.

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5225

Narrated Anas:

While the Prophet (peace be upon him) was in the house of one of his wives, one of the mothers of the believers sent a meal in a dish. The wife at whose house the Prophet was struck the hand of the servant, causing the dish to fall and break. The Prophet gathered the broken pieces of the dish and then started collecting on them the food which had been in the dish and said, “Your mother (my wife) felt jealous.” Then he detained the servant until a sound dish was brought from the wife at whose house he was. He gave the sound dish to the wife whose dish had been broken and kept the broken one at the house where it had been broken.

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5226

Narrated Jabir:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “I entered Paradise and saw a palace and asked whose palace is this? They (the Angels) said, ‘This palace belongs to Umar bin Al-Khattab.' I intended to enter it, and nothing stopped me except my knowledge about your sense of Ghira (self-respect, O Umar).” `Umar said, “O Allah’s Messenger! Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you! O Allah’s Prophet! How dare I think of my Ghira (self-respect) being offended by you?”

Chapter: The jealousy of women and their anger

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5228

Narrated Aisha:

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said to her, “I know when you are pleased with me or angry with me.” She said, “Whence do you know that?” He said, “When you are pleased with me, you say, ‘No, by the Lord of Muhammad,’ but when you are angry with me, then you say, ‘No, by the Lord of Abraham.’ ” Thereupon she said, “Yes, but by Allah, O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), I leave nothing but your name.”

Chapter: The jealousy of women and their anger

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5229

Narrated `Aisha:

I never felt so jealous of any wife of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) as I did of Khadija because Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) used to remember and praise her too often and because it was revealed to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) that he should give her the glad tidings of her having a palace of Qasab in Paradise.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was screening me with his garment while I was looking at the Ethiopians who were playing in the courtyard of the mosque. I continued watching till I was satisfied.
