Volume 4,  Book 60- Prophets (Chapter:49-53)

Chapter:49 The Advent (Descent) of Jesus, Son of Mary (peace be upon him)

Bukhari Hadith Number 3448

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, surely the son of Mary will soon descend among you and will judge mankind justly as a just ruler. He will break the cross, kill the pigs, and abolish the jizya (i.e., tax taken from non-Muslims). Wealth will be in such abundance that nobody will accept it, and a single prostration to Allah (in prayer) will be better than the whole world and all that is in it.” Abu Huraira added, “If you wish, you can recite this verse of the Holy Book: ‘And there is none of the People of the Scripture but must believe in him (i.e., Jesus as a servant of Allah and a human being) before his death. And on the Day of Judgment, he will be a witness against them.'” (Qur’an 4:159)

Bukhari Hadith Number 3449

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “How will you be when the son of Mary (i.e., Jesus) descends among you and your Imam is from among yourselves?”

Bukhari Hadith Number 3450-3451-3452

Narrated Rabi bin Hirash: Uqba bin Amr said to Hudhaifa, “Won’t you relate to us what you have heard from Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)?” He said, “I heard him say, ‘When the Dajjal appears, he will have fire and water with him. What people will think is cold water will actually be fire that burns. So if anyone of you encounters this, he should fall into what appears to be fire, because it will actually be cool, sweet water.'”

Hudhaifa added, “I also heard him say, ‘Among the people before you, there was a man visited by the Angel of Death to take his soul. He was asked whether he had done any good deeds. He replied, “I don’t remember any.” He was told to think again. He said, “The only thing I can recall is that I used to trade with people and would give a respite to the rich and forgive the debts of the poor.” So Allah admitted him to Paradise.'”

Hudhaifa further said, “I also heard him say, ‘There was a man on his deathbed who, having lost all hope of survival, instructed his family: When I die, gather a lot of wood and make a fire. When the fire consumes my flesh and reaches my bones, and they are burnt, crush the bones and scatter the ashes on a windy day into the sea.’ They did so, but Allah gathered his remains and asked him, ‘Why did you do that?’ He replied, ‘Out of fear of You.’ So Allah forgave him.”

Uqba bin Amr said, “I heard him say this, and that man used to dig graves to steal the shrouds of the dead.”

Bukhari Hadith Number 3453-3454

Narrated Aisha and Ibn Abbas: On his deathbed, Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) would place a sheet over his face, and when it became too hot, he would remove it. In that condition, he said, “May Allah’s curse be on the Jews and Christians for they took the graves of their prophets as places of worship.” He intended to warn Muslims against doing what they had done.

Chapter: 50 What has been said about Bani Israel

Bukhari Hadith Number 3455

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The Israelites used to be governed and guided by prophets. Whenever a prophet died, another succeeded him. But there will be no prophet after me; there will be Caliphs and they will increase in number.” The people asked, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! What do you command us to do?” He said, “Fulfil the pledge of allegiance to the first and then the next, and give them their due rights. Verily, Allah will ask them about what He entrusted them with.”

Bukhari Hadith Number 3456

Narrated Abu Sa`id: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “You will certainly follow the ways of those who came before you, step by step, hand span by hand span, and arm’s length by arm’s length, to the extent that if they entered a lizard’s hole, you would follow them.” We asked, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! Do you mean the Jews and the Christians?” He said, “Who else?”

Bukhari Hadith Number 3457

Narrated Anas: The people once discussed the fire and the bell (as means to announce prayer), referring to the practices of the Jews and the Christians. Then Bilal was instructed to call the Adhan by pronouncing its phrases twice, and the Iqama once only.

Bukhari Hadith Number 3458

Narrated `Aisha: She disliked that a person praying should place his hands on his hips, and said that the Jews used to do that.

Bukhari Hadith Number 3459

Narrated Ibn Umar: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Your time (i.e., the time of the Muslims) compared to the time of the previous nations is like the time between the Asr prayer and sunset. Your example compared to the Jews and Christians is like that of a man who hires workers. He says, ‘Who will work for me till midday for one Qirat each?’ The Jews did so. Then he said, ‘Who will work from midday till Asr for one Qirat each?' The Christians did so. Then he said, 'Who will work from Asr till sunset for two Qirats each?’ It is you (i.e., the Muslims) who work during this last period, and you will have a double reward. The Jews and Christians became angry and said, ‘We worked more but were paid less.’ Allah said, ‘Did I withhold any of your rightful due?’ They said, ‘No.’ Allah said, ‘Then it is My favor which I bestow on whomever I wish.'”

Bukhari Hadith Number 3460

Narrated Ibn Abbas: I heard Umar saying, “May Allah curse so-and-so! Doesn’t he know that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘May Allah curse the Jews, for although fat was forbidden to them, they melted it and sold it.'”

Bukhari Hadith Number 3461

Narrated Abdullah bin Amr: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Convey from me even if it is one verse. Tell others the stories of Bani Israel, for there is no harm in doing so. And whoever intentionally tells a lie about me, let him take his seat in the Hellfire.”

Bukhari Hadith Number 3462

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “The Jews and the Christians do not dye (their grey hair), so you shall do the opposite of what they do.”

Bukhari Hadith Number 3463

Narrated Jundub: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “Among the nations before you, there was a man who had a wound. He grew impatient with its pain, so he took a knife and cut his hand. The bleeding did not stop, and he died. Allah said, ‘My slave hastened death upon himself, so I have forbidden Paradise for him.'”

Chapter:51 The Tale of Three Israelites — a Leper, a Bald Man, and a Blind Man

Bukhari Hadith Number 3464

Abu Huraira narrated that he heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) say: Allah willed to test three Israelites—a leper, a bald man, and a blind man. So He sent an angel to them. The angel came to the leper and asked, “What do you like most?” The man replied, “A good color and good skin, for the people have a strong aversion to me.” The angel touched him, his illness was cured, and he was given good color and beautiful skin. The angel then asked, “What kind of wealth do you like best?” He replied, “Camels” (or “cows”—the narrator was unsure which of the first two men said which). So he was given a pregnant she-camel, and the angel said, “May Allah bless you in it.”

The angel went to the bald man and asked, “What do you like most?” He said, “Good hair, and to be cured of this disease, for the people dislike me.” So the angel touched him, cured his baldness, and gave him good hair. Then he asked, “What wealth do you prefer?” The man said, “Cows.” So the angel gave him a pregnant cow and said, “May Allah bless you in it.”

Then the angel came to the blind man and asked, “What do you like most?” He replied, “That Allah may restore my eyesight so I may see the people.” So the angel touched his eyes, and Allah restored his sight. The angel then asked, “What wealth do you prefer?” He said, “Sheep.” So the angel gave him a pregnant sheep.

Soon, the livestock of each man multiplied so that the leper had a valley full of camels, the bald man had a valley full of cows, and the blind man had a valley full of sheep. Later, the angel returned to the leper in the same form and appearance as when he was afflicted, and said, “I am a poor traveler who has lost all means of support. None can help me today except Allah and then you. I ask you, by Him who gave you your good color, beautiful skin, and wealth, to give me a camel so I may continue my journey.” The man said, “I have many obligations.” The angel said, “I seem to recognize you. Were you not a leper whom people despised, and were you not poor, and then Allah gave you wealth?” The man replied, “I inherited this wealth from my ancestors.” The angel said, “If you are lying, may Allah return you to your former condition.”

Then the angel went to the bald man in the same form and said what he had said to the leper. The bald man responded similarly, denying any past affliction. The angel said, “If you are lying, may Allah return you to your former condition.”

Then the angel came to the blind man in the same form as he had been before. He said, “I am a poor man and a traveler. I have lost all means and have no one to help me but Allah and then you. I ask you, by Him who restored your eyesight, to give me a sheep so I may complete my journey.” The man said, “I was once blind and Allah returned my sight. I was poor and Allah enriched me. So take anything you like, by Allah, I will not prevent you from taking anything you need for Allah’s sake.” The angel replied, “Keep your wealth. You have been tested, and Allah is pleased with you, but He is angry with your two companions.”

Chapter:52 & Chapter:53 The tale of the Cave

Bukhari Hadith Number 3465

Ibn Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: While three people from those before you were walking, it began to rain, and they took shelter in a cave. Suddenly, a rock fell from the mountain and blocked the entrance of the cave. They said to one another, “By Allah! Nothing will save you from this rock but to call upon Allah by mentioning your righteous deeds.”

One of them said, “O Allah! I had a laborer who worked for me for one Faraq (three Sas) of rice, but he left without taking his wages. I sowed that rice and from its yield I bought some cows. After a time, he returned and asked for his wage. I said to him, ‘Go to those cows and take them, for they are the product of your wage.’ He said, ‘You owe me only a Faraq of rice!’ But I told him to take the cows. If You know that I did this out of fear of You, then remove the rock.” So the rock moved slightly, but they still could not get out.

The second one said, “O Allah! I had elderly parents, and I used to offer them milk every night before anyone in my household. One night I was delayed, and when I arrived, they had already gone to sleep. I disliked waking them, and I also disliked feeding my family before them. So I waited with the milk in my hand until they woke up at dawn. If You know that I did this for Your sake, then remove the rock.” So the rock moved a bit more, and they could see the sky through the opening, but they still could not get out.

The third one said, “O Allah! I had a cousin who was the most beloved person to me, and I wanted to have an intimate relationship with her, but she refused unless I gave her one hundred Dinars. I worked hard to collect the amount and when I sat with her ready to commit the act, she said, ‘Fear Allah, and do not break the seal unlawfully.’ So I left her and the money for her. If You know that I did this out of fear of You, then remove the rock.” So Allah removed the rock completely, and they exited the cave.
