Sahih Al Bukhari Hadith Number 3406- 3422

Volume 4,  Book 60- Prophets (chapter29-39)

Chapter:29 Allah’s Statement: “…And they came upon a people devoted to some of their idols…”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3406

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah: We were with Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) picking the fruits of the ‘Arak trees, and Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “Pick the black fruit, for it is the best.”

The companions asked, “Were you a shepherd?”
He replied, “There was no prophet who was not a shepherd.”

Chapter: 30 & 31 The Death of Musa (Moses)

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3407

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Angel of Death was sent to Moses. When he came to him, Moses struck him on the eye. The angel returned to his Lord and said, “You have sent me to a servant who does not want to die.”

Allah said, “Go back to him and tell him to place his hand on the back of an ox, and for every hair that his hand covers, he will be granted one year of life.”

Moses said, “O Lord, then what will happen?”
Allah replied, “Then death.”

Moses said, “Let it come now.”

He then requested Allah to bring him close to the Sacred Land, so close that he would be a stone’s throw away from it.

Abu Huraira added: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,
“If I were there, I would show you his grave, below the red sand hill on the side of the road.”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3408

Narrated Abu Huraira: A Muslim and a Jew quarreled. The Muslim, taking an oath, said, “By Him Who has preferred Muhammad over all people!” The Jew said, “By Him Who has preferred Moses over all people.” The Muslim raised his hand and slapped the Jew, who then went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) to inform him of what had happened.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Do not give me superiority over Moses, for on the Day of Resurrection all people will become unconscious and I will be the first to regain consciousness. And behold, I will see Moses standing and holding one of the pillars of Allah’s Throne. I will not know whether he has regained consciousness before me or he was among those exempted by Allah.”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3409

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “Adam and Moses argued with each other. Moses said to Adam, ‘You are Adam whose mistake expelled you from Paradise.’ Adam replied, ‘You are Moses, whom Allah selected as His Messenger and the one to whom He spoke directly; yet you blame me for something which was already written in my fate before my creation?'”

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said twice, “So, Adam overpowered Moses.”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3410

Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet (peace be upon him) once came to us and said, “All the nations were displayed before me, and I saw a large multitude of people covering the horizon. Someone said, ‘This is Moses and his followers.'”

Chapter: 32 The Statement of Allah Taa’la: “And Allah has set forth an example for those who believe, the wife of Fir’aun…”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number3411

Narrated Abu Musa: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “Many among men reached the level of perfection, but none among the women reached this level except Asiya, Pharaoh’s wife, and Mary, the daughter of Imran. And no doubt, the superiority of Aisha over other women is like the superiority of Tharid (a meat and bread dish) over all other meals.”

Chapter: 33 Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Moses

(No hadith text is mentioned here, only commentary and explanations appear in this chapter heading.)

Chapter: 34 The Statement of Allah Taa’la: “And to (the people of) Madyan, (We sent) their brother Shu’aib…”

(No hadith text is mentioned here either, only tafsir-related commentary.)

Chapter:35 The Statement of Allah Taa’la: “And verily, Yunus was one of the Messengers…”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3412

Narrated Abdullah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “None of you should say that I am better than Yunus (i.e., Jonah).”
Musaddad added: “Yunus bin Matta.”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3413

Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “No slave (of Allah) should say that I am better than Yunus bin Matta.”
So the Prophet mentioned his father’s name with his name.

Chapter:36 The Prophet’s statement about not giving superiority over other prophets

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number3414 & 3415

Narrated Abu Huraira: Once while a Jew was selling something, he was offered a price that he was not pleased with. So he said, “No, by Him Who gave Moses superiority over all human beings!” Hearing him, an Ansari man got up and slapped him on the face and said, “You say: ‘By Him Who gave Moses superiority over all human beings’ although the Prophet (peace be upon him) is present among us!” The Jew went to the Prophet and said, “O Abu-l-Qasim! I am under the assurance and contract of security, so what right does so-and-so have to slap me?”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked the man, “Why did you slap him?” He told him the whole story. The Prophet (peace be upon him) became angry, and his anger appeared on his face. He said:
“Do not give superiority to any prophet over the others. When the trumpet will be blown, everyone in the heavens and the earth will fall unconscious, except those whom Allah wills. Then the trumpet will be blown again, and I will be the first to be resurrected. And there I will see Moses holding the side of the Throne. I do not know whether he was among those who fell unconscious and then regained consciousness before me, or whether he was one of those whom Allah had exempted. And I do not say that anyone is better than Yunus bin Matta.”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3416

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “None should say that I am better than Yunus bin Matta.”

Chapter:37 The Statement of Allah Taa’la:

“And to David We gave the Zabur…”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3417

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The reciting of the Zabur (i.e., Psalms) was made easy for David. He used to order that his riding animals be saddled, and he would finish reciting the Zabur before they were saddled. And he would never eat except from the earnings of his manual work.”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3418

Narrated Abdullah bin Amr: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) was informed that I had said: “By Allah, I will fast all the days and pray all the nights as long as I live.” On that, Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) asked me, “Are you the one who says so?” I said, “Yes, I have said it.”
He said, “You cannot do that. So fast (sometimes) and do not fast (sometimes). Pray and sleep. Fast for three days a month, for the reward of a good deed is multiplied by ten times, and so the fasting of three days a month equals the fasting of a year.”
I said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! I can do more than this.” He said, “Fast on every third day.”
I said, “I can do more than that.” He said: “Fast on alternate days, and this was the fasting of David which is the most moderate sort of fasting.”
I said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! I can do more than that.”
He said, “There is nothing better than that.”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3419

Narrated Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-As: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to me, “I have been informed that you pray all the nights and observe fast all the days; is this true?” I replied, “Yes.”
He said, “If you do so, your eyes will become weak and you will get bored. So fast three days a month, for this will be the fasting of a whole year, or equal to the fasting of a whole year.”
I said, “I find myself able to fast more.”
He said, “Then fast like the fasting of (the Prophet) David who used to fast on alternate days and would not flee on facing the enemy.”

Chapter:38 The most beloved Salat to Allah was the Salat of (the Prophet) Dawud, and the most beloved Saum was the Saum of Dawud

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3420

Narrated Abdullah bin Amr: Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said to me, “The most beloved fasting to Allah was the fasting of (the Prophet) David who used to fast on alternate days. And the most beloved prayer to Allah was the prayer of David who used to sleep for (the first) half of the night and pray for one third of it and (again) sleep for a sixth of it.”

Chapter:39 The Statement of Allah Taa’la: “… And remember Our slave Dawud, endued with power…”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3421

Narrated Mujahid: I asked Ibn Abbas, "Should we perform a prostration on reciting Surat Sad?”
He recited (the Sura) including: “And among his progeny, David, Solomon… (up to) …so follow their guidance.”
And then he said, “Your Prophet ﷺ is among those who have been ordered to follow them (i.e., the preceding apostles).”

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3422

Narrated Ibn Abbas: The prostration in Sura Sad is not amongst the compulsory prostrations, though I saw the Prophet ﷺ prostrating on reciting it.
