Sahih Al Bukhari Hadith Number 3296-3313

Volume 4, 59 Beginning of Creation

Chapter: 12 The mention of Jinn, their reward and retribution

Hadiths 3296

Based on the verse: “O assembly of jinn and men! Did there not come to you messengers from amongst you…” (Qur’an 6:130)

  • Ibn Mujahid explained the word “diminution” as a reduction in reward or justice.
  • The disbelievers of Quraysh claimed the angels were daughters of Allah, born from noble females among the jinn.
  • Allah clarifies that even the jinn know they will be brought for judgment.

Hadith 3296 — Narrated Abdur-Rahman bin Abdullah:

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri said to his father:
“I see you love sheep and the desert. So when you’re with your sheep or in the wilderness and call the Adhan (call to prayer), raise your voice. Whatever hears the Adhan—human, jinn, or anything else—will testify for you on the Day of Resurrection.”
Abu Sa’id added:
“I heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).”

Chapter: 13 The Statement of Allah: “And when We sent towards you a group of the jinn…”

  • The term “We directed” indicates Allah’s deliberate action in guiding a group of jinn to listen to the Qur’an.
  • The word “group” implies a number of jinn specifically chosen or directed for this event.

Chapter:14 The Statement of Allah: “…And the moving creatures of all kinds that He has scattered therein…”

  • Ibn Abbas explained that the male snake is called thu‘ban, and snakes are of many kinds—such as jann, vipers, and black snakes.
  • The expression “takes hold of its forelock” symbolizes Allah’s absolute control over all living beings.
  • “Spreading their wings” refers to birds extending their wings to fly; “striking with their wings” refers to their wingbeats.

Hadith 3297–3298

Narrated Ibn `Umar: He heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) giving a sermon and saying:
“Kill snakes—especially the one with two white stripes on its back (Dhu-at-Tufyatain) and the short-tailed one (Al-Abtar), because they cause blindness and miscarriages.”
Ibn `Umar added:
“While I was chasing a snake to kill it, Abu Lubabah told me, ‘Don’t kill it.’ I said, ‘The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded us to kill snakes.’ He replied, ‘He later prohibited killing those that live in houses.'”

Hadith 3299 —

Supporting narration: Multiple narrators confirmed that it was Abu Lubabah or Zaid ibn al-Khattab who saw Ibn `Umar attempting to kill the snake. This was confirmed by trusted scholars and chains of transmission.

Chapter:15 The best property of a Muslim will be sheep

Hadith 3300

Narrated Abu Sa`id al-Khudri: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“There will come a time when the best property a Muslim can possess will be sheep, which he grazes on the tops of mountains and in places where rain falls, fleeing with his religion from tribulations.”

Hadith 3301

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said:
“The main source of disbelief is in the east. Pride and arrogance are characteristics of the owners of horses and camels, and those bedouins who are busy with their camels and pay no attention to religion; while modesty and gentleness are the characteristics of the owners of sheep.”

Hadith 3302

Narrated Uqba bin Umar and Abu Masud: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) pointed with his hand towards Yemen and said: "True Belief is Yemenite, towards here. Certainly sternness and mercilessness are the qualities of those who are loud and at the base of the tails of camels, where the two horns of Satan will appear. Such qualities belong to the tribes of Rabia and Mudar.”

Hadith 3303

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“When you hear the crowing of roosters, ask for Allah’s Blessings, for their crowing indicates that they have seen an angel. And when you hear the braying of donkeys, seek refuge with Allah from Satan, for their braying indicates that they have seen a Satan.”

Hadith 3304

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“When night falls (or it is evening), keep your children close to you, for the devils spread out at that time. But when an hour of the night elapses, you can let them free. Close the doors and mention the Name of Allah, for Satan does not open a closed door.”

Hadith 3305

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“A group of Israelites were lost. Nobody knows what they did. But I do not see them except that they were cursed and changed into rats. For if you put the milk of a she-camel in front of a rat, it will not drink it, but if the milk of a sheep is put in front of it, it will drink it.”

Hadith 3306

Narrated Aisha: The Prophet (peace be upon him) called the Salamander a mischief-doer. I have not heard him ordering that it should be killed. Sa`d bin Waqqas claims that the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered that it should be killed.

Hadith 3307

Narrated Um Sharik: The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered her to kill salamanders.

Hadith 3308

Narrated Aisha: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Kill the snake with two white lines on its back, for it blinds the onlooker and causes abortion.”

Hadith 3309

Narrated Aisha: The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered that a short-tailed or mutilated-tailed snake (i.e. Abtar) should be killed, for it blinds the onlooker and causes abortion.

Hadith 3310–3311

Narrated Abu Mulaika: Ibn `Umar used to kill snakes, but afterwards he forbade killing them and said:
“Once the Prophet (peace be upon him) pulled down a wall and found a cast-off skin of a snake in it. He said, ‘Look for the snake.’ They found it and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘Kill it.’ Because of this, I used to kill snakes.
Later, I met Abu Lubaba who told me that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
‘Do not kill snakes except the short-tailed or mutilated-tailed one with two white lines on its back, for it causes abortion and makes one blind. So kill it.'”

Hadith 3312–3313

Narrated Nafi`: Ibn `Umar used to kill snakes. But when Abu Lubaba informed him that the Prophet (peace be upon him) had forbidden the killing of snakes living in houses, he gave up killing them.
