Volume 4, 56 Fighting for the Cause of Allah (Jihaad)
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3062
Chapter 182: Allah May Support the Religion with a Disobedient Man
Narrated Abu Huraira: We were in the company of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) in a Ghazwa, and he remarked about a man who claimed to be a Muslim, saying, “This man is from the people of the Fire.” When the battle started, the man fought violently till he was wounded. Somebody said, “O Allah’s Messenger! The man whom you described as being from the people of the Fire fought violently today and died.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “He will go to the Fire.” Some people doubted, but then someone said he was still alive but severely wounded. When night fell, he lost patience and committed suicide. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Allah is Greater! I testify that I am Allah’s Slave and His Apostle.” Then he ordered Bilal to announce: “None will enter Paradise but a Muslim, and Allah may support this religion (Islam) even with a disobedient man.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3063
Chapter 183: Taking Leadership in Battle Without Formal Appointment
Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) delivered a sermon and said, “Zaid took the flag and was martyred, then Ja’far took it and was martyred, then Abdullah bin Rawaha took it and was martyred, and then Khalid bin Al-Walid took it without being appointed, and Allah gave him victory.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) added, “I am not pleased that they should remain (alive) with us,” while his eyes were shedding tears.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3064
Chapter 184: Reinforcement in Battle
Narrated Anas: Some tribes came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) claiming Islam and requested support against their enemies. He sent seventy Ansar scholars (Al-Qurra’), who were martyred at Bi’r Ma’una. The Prophet (peace be upon him) invoked evil on the betrayers for a month.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3065
Chapter 185: Staying in a Conquered Land for Three Days
Narrated Abu Talha: Whenever the Prophet (peace be upon him) conquered a people, he would stay in their town for three days.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3066
Chapter 186: Distribution of War Booty

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3067
Chapter 187: If Polytheists Take a Muslim’s Property as War Booty
Narrated Nafi’ (ra): A horse of Ibn Umar fled and the enemy took it. Then the Muslims conquered the enemy and the horse was returned to him during the lifetime of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him). And also, once a slave of Ibn Umar fled and joined the Byzantines, and when the Muslims conquered them, Khalid bin Al-Walid returned the slave to him after the death of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3068
Narrated Nafi’ (ra): Once a slave of Ibn Umar fled and joined the Byzantines. Khalid bin Al-Walid got him back and returned him to Abdullah (bin Umar). Once a horse of Ibn Umar also ran away and followed the Byzantines, and he (i.e., Khalid) got it back and returned it to Abdullah.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3069
Narrated Ibn Umar (ra): He was riding a horse on the day the Muslims fought (against the Byzantines), and the commander of the Muslim army was Khalid bin Al-Walid, who had been appointed by Abu Bakr. The enemy took the horse away, and when the enemy was defeated, Khalid returned the horse to him.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3070
Chapter 188: Speaking with an Unfamiliar Accent
Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah (ra): I said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! We have slaughtered a young sheep of ours and have ground one Sa of barley. So, I invite you along with some persons.” So, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said in a loud voice, “O the people of the Trench! Jabir has prepared ‘Sur’ (a meal), so come along!”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3071
Narrated Um Khalid (ra) (the daughter of Khalid bin Sa’id): I went to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) with my father, and I was wearing a yellow shirt. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “Sanah, Sanah!” (Abdullah, the narrator, said that ‘Sanah’ meant ‘good’ in the Ethiopian language). I then started playing with the seal of Prophethood (between the Prophet’s shoulders), and my father rebuked me harshly for that. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “Leave her.” Then he said (thrice), “Wear this dress till it is worn out, then wear it till it is worn out, then wear it till it is worn out.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3072
Narrated Abu Huraira (ra): Al-Hasan bin Ali took a date from the dates of Sadaqah (charity) and put it in his mouth. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him in Persian, “Kakh, kakh! (i.e., Don’t you know that we do not eat the Sadaqah?)”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3073
Chapter 189: Al-Ghulul (Stealing from War Booty)
Narrated Abu Huraira (ra): The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood among us and mentioned Al-Ghulul (embezzlement), emphasizing its gravity. He said, “I do not want to see any of you on the Day of Resurrection carrying a sheep on his neck that is bleating, or a horse that is neighing, saying, ‘O Messenger of Allah, intercede for me!’ I will reply, ‘I cannot help you, for I have conveyed Allah’s message to you.’ Or a man carrying a camel that is grunting, or gold and silver, or clothes fluttering in the wind, saying the same, and I will give the same reply.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3074
Chapter 190: A Little Ghulul (Embezzlement)
Narrated Abdullah bin Amr (ra): There was a man who looked after the family and the belongings of the Prophet (peace be upon him) called Karkara. The man died and Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “He is in the Fire.” The people went to look at him and found in his possession a cloak he had stolen from the war booty.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3075
Chapter 191: Not to Slaughter the Camels and Sheep of the Booty Before Distribution
Narrated Abaya bin Rifaa from his grandfather Rafi (ra): We were with the Prophet (peace be upon him) at Dhul-Hulaifa when the people suffered from hunger. We acquired some camels and sheep as booty while the Prophet (peace be upon him) was behind the people. They hurried and put cooking pots on the fire. When he came, he ordered the pots to be overturned. Then he distributed the booty, equating ten sheep to one camel.
A camel fled and the people chased it until they grew tired, as they had few horses. A man shot it with an arrow and stopped it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “These animals have wild instincts like wild beasts. If any animal flees from you, deal with it similarly.”
My grandfather asked, “We fear we may meet the enemy tomorrow and have no knives. Can we slaughter with canes?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, “What causes blood to flow profusely and has Allah’s Name mentioned over it is permissible to eat – except with a tooth or nail. The tooth is a bone, and the nail is the slaughtering instrument of Ethiopians.”
