Sahih Al Bukhari Hadith Number 3020-3034

Volume 456 Fighting for the Cause of Allah (Jihaad)

Hadith Number 3020

(154) Chapter: The Burning of Houses and Date-Palms

Narrated Jarir: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said to me,
“Will you relieve me from Dhul-Khalasa?”
Dhul-Khalasa was a house (of an idol) belonging to the tribe of Khath’am called Al-Ka`ba Al-Yamaniya. So, I proceeded with one hundred and fifty cavalry men from the tribe of Ahmas, who were excellent knights. I could not sit firm on horses, so the Prophet (ﷺ) struck me on the chest until I saw the marks of his fingers and said,
“O Allah! Make him firm and make him a guiding and rightly guided man.”

Jarir then proceeded towards that house, dismantled it, and burnt it. Then he sent a messenger to inform the Prophet (ﷺ). The messenger said,
“By Him Who sent you with the Truth, I did not come to you until I had left it like a scabby camel (i.e. completely destroyed).”

Jarir added, “The Prophet (ﷺ) asked for Allah’s blessings for the horses and the men of Ahmas five times.”

(155) Chapter: Killing a Sleeping Mushrik

Narrated Al-Bara bin Azib: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) sent a group of Ansari men to kill Abu Rafi`. One of them set out and entered their fort. He said: “I hid myself in a stable for their animals. They locked the fort. Later, they lost a donkey and went out searching for it. I joined them pretending to search too. When they found it and entered the fort again, I entered with them. They locked the gate and put the keys in a small window. When they slept, I took the keys, opened the gate, and went to Abu Rafi and called out, 'O Abu Rafi.’ He replied. I followed his voice and struck him. He screamed. I went out and returned, pretending to be a helper and changed my voice saying, ‘What happened, O Abu Rafi?' He replied, 'I don’t know who struck me!' Then I drove my sword into his belly and pressed until it reached the bone. I left, confused, and tried to descend a ladder but fell and injured my foot. I returned to my companions and said, 'I won't leave until I hear the women mourning.' Then I heard the wailing of the women for Abu Rafi, the merchant of Hijaz, and left. We went back to the Prophet (ﷺ) and informed him.”

‘O people! Do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for safety. But when you face them, be patient. And know that Paradise is under the shade of swords.’

Narrated Al-Bara: I saw Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) on the day of the Battle of the Trench carrying earth until the hair of his chest was covered with dust. He was a hairy man. He was reciting verses of `Abdullah (bin Rawaha):
“O Allah, were it not for You, we would not have been guided, nor would we have given in charity, nor prayed. So, bestow on us calmness, and when we meet the enemy, make our feet firm, for indeed, if they want to put us in affliction, we would not flee but withstand them.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) used to raise his voice while reciting these verses. (See Hadith No. 432, Vol. 5).
