Volume 7 – Book 77, Dress (5783 to 5969)

(1) Chapter: “Say: Who has forbidden the adornment with clothes given by Allah which He has produced for His slaves?”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5783

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “Allah will not look at the person who drags his garment behind him out of conceit.”

(2) Chapter: Whoever dragged his Izar without conceit

Sahih al-Bukhari 5784

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Allah will not look, on the Day of Resurrection, at the person who drags his garment behind him out of conceit.” Abu Bakr said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! One side of my Izar hangs low if I do not take care of it.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “You are not one of those who do that out of arrogance.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5785

Narrated Abu Bakra: A solar eclipse occurred while we were sitting with the Prophet (peace be upon him). He got up dragging his garment hurriedly until he reached the mosque. The people gathered, and he offered a two-rak’ah prayer. When the eclipse was over, he faced us and said, “The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. If you see something like this, then offer prayer and invoke Allah until it is cleared.”

(3) Chapter: To tuck up or roll up the clothes

Sahih al-Bukhari 5786

Narrated Abu Juhaifa: I saw Bilal bringing a short spear and fixing it in the ground, then he proclaimed the Iqama. I saw Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) coming out wearing a cloak with its sleeves rolled up, and he offered a two-rak’ah prayer facing the spear. I saw people and animals passing in front of him beyond the spear.

(4) Chapter: The part of the garment that hangs below the ankles is in the Fire

Sahih al-Bukhari 5787

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whatever of the Izar hangs below the ankles is in the Fire.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5788

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “Allah will not look, on the Day of Resurrection, at a person who drags his Izar behind him out of pride and arrogance.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5789

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (peace be upon him), or Abu al-Qasim, said, “While a man was walking dressed in a two-piece garment and admiring his appearance with neatly combed hair, Allah made him sink into the earth, and he will continue sinking into it until the Day of Resurrection.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5790

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “While a man was dragging his Izar behind him, Allah caused the earth to swallow him, and he will continue sinking into it until the Day of Resurrection.” Abu Huraira also narrated that he heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) give this narration.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5791

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever drags his clothes out of pride and arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.” When asked if this applied only to the Izar, it was replied that nothing specific was mentioned, neither Izar nor shirt.

(6) Chapter: The fringed Izar

Sahih al-Bukhari 5792

Narrated Aisha: The wife of Rifa’ah al-Qurazi came to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) while I and Abu Bakr were present. She said, “O Allah’s Messenger! I was married to Rifa’ah, and he divorced me irrevocably. Then I married Abdul-Rahman bin al-Zubair, who, by Allah, only has something like the fringe of a garment.” Khalid bin Said overheard her from outside and told Abu Bakr to stop her from speaking openly before the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) only smiled and said, “Perhaps you want to return to Rifa’ah? That is impossible unless Abdul-Rahman has consummated the marriage with you.” This became the ruling afterward.

(7) Chapter: The Rida

Sahih al-Bukhari 5793

Narrated Ali: The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked for his Rida, put it on, and set out walking. Zaid bin Haritha and I followed him until he reached the house where Hamza was present. He asked for permission to enter, and they allowed him in.

(8) Chapter: Wearing of shirts

Sahih al-Bukhari 5794

Narrated Ibn Umar: A man asked, “O Allah’s Messenger, what garments should a Muhrim wear?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “A Muhrim should not wear a shirt, trousers, a hooded cloak, or leather socks unless he cannot find sandals; in that case he should cut the socks below the ankles.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5795

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) came after Abdullah bin Ubayy had already been placed in his grave. The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered that he be taken out and placed on his knees. He then blew his breath over him and clothed him with his own shirt, and Allah knows best.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5796

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: When Abdullah bin Ubayy died, his son came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and requested the Prophet’s shirt to shroud his father and asked him to pray the funeral prayer and ask Allah’s forgiveness for him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave him the shirt and said, “Notify us when you are finished.” When the funeral was ready and the Prophet (peace be upon him) approached to pray, Umar stopped him and said, “Did not Allah forbid you from praying for the hypocrites?” Then Allah revealed, “And never pray for any of them who dies, nor stand at his grave.” After that the Prophet (peace be upon him) stopped offering funeral prayers for hypocrites.

(9) Chapter: The Jaib (shirt opening or pocket)

Sahih al-Bukhari 5797

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) gave the example of a miser and a generous man as two people wearing iron coats of armor up to their necks. When the generous man gives charity, his armor becomes loose and expands until it covers his fingertips and erases his tracks. When the miser intends to give charity, his armor tightens and every ring locks into place. Abu Huraira added, “I saw Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) illustrating this by placing his fingers into the opening of his shirt, trying to widen it, but it would not expand.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5798

(10) Chapter: Wearing a cloak of narrow sleeves while on a journey
Narrated Al-Mughira bin Shu’ba: The Prophet (peace be upon him) went to answer the call of nature, and when he returned, I met him with water and he performed the ablution while he was wearing a Sham cloak. He rinsed his mouth, put water in his nose and blew it out, washed his face, and tried to take his hands out of his sleeves, but they were too narrow, so he took his hands out from under his chest and washed them and then passed his wet hands over his head and over his Khuffs.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5799

(11) Chapter: To wear a woolen cloak during the Ghazawat
Narrated Al-Mughira: One night I was with the Prophet (peace be upon him) on a journey. He asked me, “Have you got water with you?” I replied, “Yes.” So he got down from his she-camel and went away till he disappeared in the darkness of the night. Then he came back and I poured water for him from the pot for ablution. He washed his face and hands while he was wearing a woollen cloak, the sleeves of which were narrow, so he could not take his arms out of it. So he took them out from underneath the cloak, then washed his forearms and passed his wet hands over his head. Then I tried to take off his Khuffs, but he said, “Leave them, for I have performed ablution before putting them on,” and so he passed his wet hands over them.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5800

(12) Chapter: Al-Qaba
Narrated Al-Miswar bin Makhrama: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) distributed some Qabas, but he did not give anything to Makhrama. Makhrama said to me, “O my son! Let us go to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him).” So I went with him, and he said, “Go in and call him for me.” So I called the Prophet (peace be upon him) for him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) came out to him wearing one of those Qabas and said to Makhrama, “I have kept this for you.” Makhrama looked at it and said, “Makhrama is satisfied now.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5801

Narrated ‘Uqba bin ‘Amir: A silken Farruj was presented to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and he put it on and offered the prayer in it. When he finished the prayer, he took it off violently as if he disliked it and said, “This garment does not befit those who fear Allah!”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5803

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: A man said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! What type of clothes should a Muhrim wear?” Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) replied, “Do not wear shirts, turbans, trousers, hooded cloaks, or Khuffs; but if someone cannot get sandals, then he may wear Khuffs after cutting them short below the ankles. Do not wear clothes touched by saffron or wars.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5804

(14) Chapter: Trousers
Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever cannot get an Izar can wear trousers, and whoever cannot get sandals can wear Khuffs.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5805

Narrated Abdullah: A man got up and said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! What do you order us to wear when we assume the state of Ihram?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, “Do not wear shirts, trousers, turbans, hooded cloaks, or Khuffs—except if a man has no sandals, he may wear Khuffs after cutting them short below the ankles; and do not wear clothes touched with saffron or wars.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5806

(15) Chapter: Turbans
Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “A Muhrim should not wear a shirt, a turban, trousers, hooded cloaks, a garment touched with saffron or wars, or Khuffs, except for one who cannot find sandals, in which case he should cut the Khuffs below the ankles.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5807

(16) Chapter: At-Taqannu
Narrated Aisha: Some Muslim men emigrated to Ethiopia, whereupon Abu Bakr also prepared for emigration, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him, “Wait, for I hope that Allah will allow me also to emigrate.” Abu Bakr said, “Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you! Do you hope for that?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Yes.” So Abu Bakr stayed to accompany the Prophet (peace be upon him), and he fed two she-camels he had on the leaves of the Samur tree for four months. One day while we were sitting in our house at midday, someone said to Abu Bakr, “Here is Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), coming with his head and part of his face covered at an hour he never used to come.” Abu Bakr said, “Let my father and mother be sacrificed for him! Something urgent must have brought him.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) entered and said to Abu Bakr, “Let those who are with you go out.” Abu Bakr said, “They are your family.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “I have been granted permission to leave (Mecca).” Abu Bakr said, “Let me accompany you, O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)!” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Yes.” Abu Bakr said, “Take one of these two she-camels of mine.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “I will take it only after paying its price.” We prepared their baggage and put their food in a leather bag. Asma’ bint Abu Bakr tore a piece from her girdle and tied the bag, and for this reason she was called “Dhat an-Nitaqayn.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr went to a cave in Mount Thawr and stayed there for three nights. Abdullah bin Abu Bakr, a young intelligent man, would stay with them at night and leave before dawn so that he would appear among the Quraysh in the morning. If he heard of any plot against them, he would learn it and convey it to them at night. ‘Amir bin Fuhayra, the freed slave of Abu Bakr, used to graze a flock of sheep and bring them to them after Isha’, and they would sleep until he awakened them before dawn. He did so for all three nights.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5809

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Once I was walking with Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and he was wearing a Najram Burd with thick margin. A Bedouin followed him and pulled his Burd so violently that I noticed the side of the shoulder of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) affected by the margin of the Burd because of that violent pull. The Bedouin said, “O Muhammad! Give me some of Allah’s wealth which is with you.” Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) turned and looked at him, and smiling, he ordered that he be given something.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5810

Narrated Abu Hazim: Sahl bin Sa`d said, “A lady came with a Burda.” Sahl then asked the people, “Do you know what a Burda is?” Somebody said, “Yes, it is a Shamla with a woven border.” Sahl added, “The lady said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! I have knitted this Burda with my own hands for you to wear it.’ Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) took it and he was in need of it. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) came out to us wearing it as an Izar. A man felt it and said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! Give it to me to wear.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘Yes.’ Then he sat for some time, and when he went home, he folded it and sent it to him. The people said to that man, ‘You have not done the right thing. You asked him for it though you know that he does not refuse anyone.’ The man said, ‘By Allah! I only asked so that it may be my shroud when I die.’ Sahl added, ‘Later it was his shroud.’”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5811

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) saying, “From among my followers, a group of seventy-thousand will enter Paradise without being asked for their accounts. Their faces will be shining like the moon.” ‘Ukasha bin Muhsin Al-Asadi got up, lifting his covering sheet, and said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! Invoke Allah for me that He may include me with them.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “O Allah! Make him from them.” Then another man from the Ansar got up and said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! Invoke Allah for me that He may include me with them.” On that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “‘Ukasha has anticipated you.”

Narrated Aisha and Abdullah bin Abbas: When the disease of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) grew severe, he covered his face with a Khamisa, but when he felt short of breath, he removed it and said, “It is like that! May Allah curse the Jews and Christians because they took the graves of their prophets as places of worship.” He warned his followers against doing what they had done.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5817

Narrated Aisha: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) offered prayer while he was wearing a Khamisa that had printed marks. He looked at its marks, and when he finished prayer, he said, “Take this Khamisa to Abu Jahm, for it has just now diverted my attention from my prayer, and bring me the Anbijaniya of Abu Jahm bin Hudhaifa.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5818

Narrated Abu Burda: Aisha brought out to us a Kisa and an Izar and said, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) died while wearing these two.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5819

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade the Mulamasa and Munabadha (bargains), the offering of two prayers: one after the morning prayer until the sun rises and the other after the ‘Asr prayer until the sun sets, and that a person should sit wearing one garment, none of which covers his private parts, and he also forbade Ishtimal-as-Samma.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5820

Narrated Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade two ways of wearing clothes and two types of sales. (22) Chapter: The black Khamisa

Sahih al-Bukhari 5823

Narrated Um Khalid bint Khalid: The Prophet (peace be upon him) was given some clothes including a small black Khamisa. He said, “To whom shall we give this?” The people remained silent, and he said, “Bring Um Khalid.” I was brought, carried as I was a small girl. The Prophet (peace be upon him) took the Khamisa in his hands, made me wear it, and said, “May you live long enough that your dress wears out and you mend it many times.” There were green or yellow designs on it, and he said, “O Um Khalid! This is Sanah,” which in Ethiopian means “beautiful.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5824

Narrated Anas bin Malik: When Um Sulaim gave birth to a child she said to me, “O Anas! Watch this boy and do not give him anything to eat or drink until you have taken him to the Prophet (peace be upon him) tomorrow morning for the Tahnik.” So the next morning I took him to the Prophet (peace be upon him), who was sitting in a garden wearing a Huraithiya Khamisa and branding the she-camel on which he had come during the Conquest of Mecca.

(23) Chapter: Green Clothes

Sahih al-Bukhari 5825

Narrated Ikrima: Rifa’a divorced his wife whereupon Abdur-Rahman bin Az-Zubair Al-Qurazi married her. Aisha said that the lady came wearing a green veil and complained to her of her husband, showing her a green spot on her skin caused by beating. It was the habit of the women to support each other, so when Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) came, Aisha said, “I have not seen any woman suffering as much as the believing women. Look! Her skin is greener than her clothes!” When Abdur-Rahman heard that his wife had gone to the Prophet (peace be upon him), he came with his two sons from another wife. She said, “By Allah! I have done no wrong to him, but he is impotent and is as useless to me as this,” holding and showing the fringe of her garment. Abdur-Rahman said, “By Allah, O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! She has told a lie! I am very strong and can satisfy her but she is disobedient and wants to return to Rifa’a.” Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said to her, “If that is your intention, then know that it is unlawful for you to remarry Rifa’a unless Abdur-Rahman has had sexual intercourse with you.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw two boys with Abdur-Rahman and asked, “Are these your sons?” Abdur-Rahman said, “Yes.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “You claim what you claim? But by Allah, these boys resemble him as a crow resembles a crow.”

He said, “Nobody says: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah’ and then later on dies while believing in that, except that he will enter Paradise.” I said, “Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?” He said, “Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft.” I said again, “Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?” He said, “Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft.” I repeated, “Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?” He said, “Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft, in spite of Abu Dharr’s dislike.” Abu Abdullah said, “This is at the time of death or before it, if one repents and regrets and says ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah,’ he will be forgiven his sins.”

To our knowledge, by that he meant embroidery.

Narrated Abu Uthman: While we were at Adharbijan, Umar wrote to us: “Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade wearing silk except this much.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) approximated his two fingers (index and middle fingers) to illustrate it. Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: Umar saw a silk suit being sold, so he said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! Why don’t you buy it so that you may wear it when delegates come to you, and also on Fridays?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “This is worn only by him who has no share in the Hereafter.” Later the Prophet (peace be upon him) sent a silk suit to Umar suitable for wearing. One day he dismounted and went among the trees of Arak to answer the call of nature, and when he returned, I asked him. He said, “They were Aisha and Hafsa.” Then he added, “We never used to give significance to women in the days of pre-Islamic ignorance, but when Islam came and Allah mentioned their rights, we recognized them but did not allow them to interfere in our affairs. Once there was some dispute between me and my wife, and she answered me back in a loud voice. I said, ‘Strange! You can reply like this?’ She said, ‘Yes. Do you say this to me while your daughter troubles Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)?’ So I went to Hafsa and said, ‘I warn you not to disobey Allah and His Messenger.’ I then went to Um Salama and told her the same. She said, ‘O Umar! It surprises me that you interfere in our affairs so much that you would even poke your nose into the affairs of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and his wives.’ She rejected my advice. There was an Ansari man; if he was absent from the Prophet (peace be upon him) and I was present, I would tell him what occurred, and if I was absent and he was present, he would tell me what happened. During that time all the rulers of the surrounding lands had surrendered to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) except the king of Ghassan in Sham, and we were afraid he might attack us. Suddenly the Ansari came and said, ‘A major event has happened!’ I asked, ‘What? Has the Ghassani king come?’ He said, ‘Greater! Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) has divorced his wives!’ I went and found all of them weeping, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) had withdrawn to an upper room. I was admitted and saw him lying on a mat that had left an imprint on his side. I mentioned what I had said to Hafsa and Um Salama and what reply Um Salama gave me. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) smiled and remained there twenty-nine days and then came down.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5844
Narrated Um Salama: One night the Prophet (peace be upon him) woke up saying, “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah! Then he said, “Bring me Um Khalid.” So I was brought to him and he dressed me with it with his own hands and said twice, “May you live so long that you will wear out many garments.” He then looked at the embroidery of the Khamisa and said, “O Um Khalid!
