Narrated Ibn Umar:
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever drinks alcoholic drinks in the world and does not repent before dying will be deprived of it in the Hereafter.”

Narrated Abu Huraira:
On the night the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was taken on a night journey (Al-Isra), two cups—one containing wine and the other milk—were presented to him at Jerusalem. He looked at both and chose the cup of milk. Gabriel said, “Praise be to Allah Who guided you to Al-Fitra (the right path). If you had chosen the wine, your nation would have gone astray.”

Narrated Anas:
I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) something that none other than I will narrate to you. He said, “From among the portents of the Hour are the following: ignorance in religious affairs will prevail, knowledge will decrease, illegal sexual intercourse will spread, alcoholic drinks will be drunk in abundance, men will decrease and women will increase to the extent that for every fifty women there will be one man to look after them.”

Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “An adulterer, at the time he is committing adultery, is not a believer; a person, at the time of drinking alcohol, is not a believer; and a thief, at the time of stealing, is not a believer.” Ibn Shihab said: Abdul Malik bin Abi Bakr told me that Abu Bakr used to narrate this from Abu Huraira, adding: “And the one who snatches something openly while people are watching him is not a believer at the time he is snatching it.”

Narrated Ibn Umar:
Alcoholic drinks were prohibited when there was nothing of them (of the special kind of wine) in Medina.

Narrated Anas:
Alcoholic drinks were prohibited at a time when we could rarely find wine made from grapes in Medina, for most of our liquors were made from unripe and ripe dates.

Umar stood on the pulpit and said, “Now then, prohibition of alcoholic drinks has been revealed, and these drinks are prepared from five things: grapes, dates, honey, wheat, and barley. And an alcoholic drink is that which disturbs the mind.”

I was serving Abu Ubaida, Abu Talha, and Ubai bin Ka‘b with a drink prepared from ripe and unripe dates. Then someone came to them and said, “Alcoholic drinks have been prohibited.” Abu Talha said, “Get up, O Anas, and pour it out!” So I poured it out.

While I was serving my uncles and pouring for them a drink prepared from dates—I was the youngest among them—someone came and said, “Alcoholic drinks have been prohibited.” They said, “Throw it away.” So I threw it away.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Do not make drinks in Ad-Dubba‘ nor in Al-Muzaffat.” Abu Huraira used to add to them Al-Hantam and An-Naqir.
Chapter: Alcoholic drink is any drink that disturbs the mind

Narrated Ibn Umar:
Umar delivered a sermon from the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), saying, “Alcoholic drinks were prohibited by Divine Order. These drinks used to be prepared from five things: grapes, dates, wheat, barley, and honey. Alcoholic drink is that which disturbs the mind.” Umar added, “I wish the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had not left us before giving us clear guidance about three things: how much a grandfather may inherit, the inheritance of Al-Kalala (the deceased person who leaves neither ascendants nor descendants), and various types of usury.”

“Alcoholic drinks are prepared from five things: raisins, dates, wheat, barley, and honey.”

Narrated Abu ‘Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash’ari:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks, and the use of musical instruments as lawful. There will be people who will stay near the side of a mountain, and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, ‘Return to us tomorrow.’ Allah will destroy them during the night and will cause the mountain to fall upon them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs until the Day of Resurrection.”

Narrated Sahl:
Abu Usaid As-Sa‘idi came and invited the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on the occasion of his wedding. His wife, who was the bride, was serving them. She said, “Do you know what drink I prepared for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)? I soaked some dates in water in a Tur overnight.”
Chapter: The Prophet (peace be upon him) re-allowed the use of forbidden bowls and containers

Narrated Jabir:
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade the use of certain containers, but the Ansar said, “We cannot do without them.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) then said, “If so, then use them.”

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade the use of certain containers used for preparing alcoholic drinks, someone said, “But not all people can find skins.” So he allowed them to use clay jars that were not covered with pitch.

I asked Al-Aswad, “Did you ask Aisha, Mother of the Believers, about the containers in which it is disliked to prepare non-alcoholic drinks?” He said, “Yes. I said, ‘O Mother of the Believers! What containers did the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbid to use for preparing such drinks?’ She said, ‘The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade us, his family, to prepare drinks in Ad-Dubba’ and Al-Muzaffat.’ I asked, ‘Didn’t you mention Al-Jar and Al-Hantam?’ She said, ‘I tell you what I have heard; shall I tell you what I have not heard?’”

Narrated Ash-Shaibani:
I heard Abdullah bin Abi Aufa saying, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade the use of green jars.” I said, “Shall we drink out of white jars?” He said, “No.”
Chapter: (One can drink) date-syrup as long as it does not intoxicate (not fermented)

Narrated Sahl bin Sa‘d:
Abu Usaid As-Sa‘idi invited the Prophet (peace be upon him) to his wedding banquet. His wife, who was the bride, was serving them. She said, “Do you know what kind of syrup I prepared for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)? I soaked some dates in water in a Tur overnight.”
Chapter: Al-Badhaq (a kind of alcoholic drink)

Narrated Abu Al-Juwairiyya:
I asked Ibn Abbas about Al-Badhaq. He said, “Muhammad (peace be upon him) prohibited alcoholic drinks before they were even called Al-Badhaq, saying, ‘Any drink that intoxicates is unlawful.’” I said, “What about good lawful drinks?” He said, “Apart from what is lawful and good, all other things are unlawful and unclean.”

Narrated Aisha:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to like sweet edible things and honey.
Chapter: Unripe-date drink and ripe-date drink should not be mixed if it is an intoxicant

Narrated Anas:
While I was serving Abu Talha, Abu Dujana, and Abu Suhail bin Al-Baida with a drink made from a mixture of unripe and ripe dates, the prohibition of alcoholic drinks was revealed. I threw it away, as I was their butler and the youngest among them, and we used to consider that drink as an alcoholic drink in those days.

Narrated Jabir:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade the drinking of alcoholic drinks prepared from raisins, dates, unripe dates, and fresh ripe dates.

Narrated Abu Qatada:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade the mixing of ripe and unripe dates and also the mixing of dates and raisins for preparing a syrup. The syrup of each kind of fruit should be prepared separately. One may drink such syrup as long as it is fresh.

The people doubted whether Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) was fasting on the Day of Arafat or not. So I sent a cup containing milk to him, and he drank it.

Abu Humaid brought a cup of milk from a place called Al-Naqi. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said to him, “Will you not cover it, even by placing a stick across it?”

Abu Humaid, an Ansari man, came from Al-Naqi carrying a cup of milk to the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Will you not cover it, even by placing a stick across it?”

Narrated Al-Bara:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) came from Mecca with Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr said, “We passed by a shepherd, and at that time Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) was thirsty. I milked a little milk in a bowl, and Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) drank until I was pleased. Then Suraqa bin Ju’shum came to us riding a horse, chasing us. The Prophet (peace be upon him) invoked against him, whereupon Suraqa requested him not to do so, promising to return. The Prophet (peace be upon him) agreed.”

Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “The best object of charity is a she-camel which has newly given birth and gives plenty of milk, or a she-goat which gives plenty of milk, and is given to somebody to utilize its milk by milking one bowl in the morning and one in the evening.”

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) drank milk and then rinsed his mouth and said, “It contains fat.”

Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “I was raised to the Lote Tree and saw four rivers—two were visible and two were hidden. The visible ones were the Nile and the Euphrates, and the hidden ones were two rivers in Paradise. Then I was given three bowls: one containing milk, one containing honey, and one containing wine. I took the one with milk and drank from it. It was said to me, ‘You and your followers are upon the natural path (of Islam).’”

Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5611
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Abu Talha had the largest number of date-palms among the Ansar in Medina. The dearest of his property to him was the Bairuha garden, which faced the Prophet’s Mosque. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) used to enter it and drink from its fresh water. When the verse “By no means shall you attain righteousness unless you spend of that which you love” (3:92) was revealed, Abu Talha said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! The dearest of my property to me is Bairuha, and I give it in charity for Allah’s sake. Spend it where Allah guides you.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Good! That is profitable wealth. I think you should give it to your relatives.” Abu Talha said, “I will do so,” and he distributed it among his relatives and cousins.
Chapter: The drinking of milk with water
Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5612
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
I saw Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) drinking milk. He came to my house, and I milked a sheep and mixed the milk with water from the well for him. He drank from it, and on his left was Abu Bakr, while on his right was a Bedouin. The Prophet (peace be upon him) then gave the remaining milk to the Bedouin and said, “The right! The right (comes first).”

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah:
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and one of his companions entered upon an Ansari man. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him, “If you have water that has been kept overnight in a water-skin, give it to us, otherwise we will drink directly from it.” The man was watering his garden and said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! I have water kept overnight; let us go to the shade.” He poured water into a bowl, milked a goat into it, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) drank from it, and so did his companion.

Narrated An-Nazzal:
Ali came to the gate of the courtyard and drank water while standing. He said, “Some people dislike drinking while standing, but I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) do as I am doing now.”
Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5616
Narrated An-Nazzal bin Sabra:
Ali offered the Zuhr prayer and then sat in the courtyard of Kufa to deal with the people’s affairs until Asr. Then water was brought to him; he drank from it, washed his face, hands, head, and feet, and then stood up and drank the remaining water while standing. He said, “Some people dislike drinking water while standing, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) did as I have done.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) drank Zamzam water while standing.
Chapter: To drink while on the back of a camel
Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5618
Narrated Um Al-Fadl (daughter of Al-Harith):
She sent a bowl of milk to the Prophet (peace be upon him) while he was standing at Arafat in the afternoon of the Day of Arafat. He took it in his hand and drank it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was on the back of his camel.
Chapter: The one on the right should drink first

Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Milk mixed with water was brought to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) while a Bedouin was on his right and Abu Bakr was on his left. He drank of it and then gave it to the Bedouin and said, “The right, the right (first).”
Chapter: The permission of the one on right to give the drink to an elder person first

Narrated Sahl bin Sa’d:
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) was offered something to drink. He drank of it while on his right was a boy and on his left were some elderly people. He said to the boy, “May I give these elderly people first?” The boy said, “By Allah, O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! I will not give up my share from you to somebody else.” On that, Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) placed the cup in the boy’s hand.
Chapter: To drink water from a basin by putting mouth in it

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) and one of his companions entered upon an Ansari man. The Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companion greeted the man, and he replied, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you! It is hot,” while he was watering his garden. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked him, “If you have water kept overnight in a water skin, (give us), or else we will drink by putting our mouths in the basin.” The man said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! I have water kept overnight in a water-skin.” He went to the shade, poured some water into a bowl, and milked some milk from a domestic goat in it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) drank and then gave the bowl to the man who had come along with him to drink.
Chapter: The younger should serve the older
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5622
Narrated Anas:
I was waiting on my uncles, serving them with an alcoholic drink prepared from dates, and I was the youngest of them. Suddenly it was said that alcoholic drinks had been prohibited. So they said to me, “Throw it away.” And I threw it away. The sub-narrator said: I asked Anas what their drink was made from. He replied, “From ripe dates and unripe dates.”
Chapter: Covering the containers
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5623
Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah:
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “When night falls (or when it is evening), stop your children from going out, for the devils spread out at that time. But when an hour of the night has passed, release them and close the doors and mention Allah’s Name, for Satan does not open a closed door. Tie the mouth of your water-skin and mention Allah’s Name; cover your containers and utensils and mention Allah’s Name. Cover them even by placing something across it, and extinguish your lamps.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5624
Narrated Jabir:
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “Extinguish the lamps when you go to bed; close your doors; tie the mouths of your water skins, and cover the food and drinks.” I think he added, “… even with a stick you place across the container.”
Chapter: The bending of the mouths of the water-skins for the sake of drinking from them

Narrated Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri:
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade the bending of the mouths of water skins for the sake of drinking from them.

Narrated Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri:
I heard Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) forbidding the drinking of water by bending the mouths of water skins, i.e., drinking from their mouths directly.

Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade drinking directly from the mouth of a water skin or other leather containers, and forbade preventing one’s neighbor from fixing a peg in the wall of one’s house.

Chapter: It is forbidden to breathe in the vessel (while drinking)

Narrated Abu Qatada:
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “When you drink (water), do not breathe in the vessel; and when you urinate, do not touch your penis with your right hand. And when you cleanse yourself after defecation, do not use your right hand.”
Chapter: Breathing twice or thrice while drinking

Narrated Thumama bin Abdullah:
Anas used to breathe twice or thrice in the vessel while drinking and used to say that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to take three breaths while drinking.

Narrated Ibn Abi Laila:
While Hudhaifa was at Mada’in, he asked for water. The chief of the village brought him a silver vessel. Hudhaifa threw it away and said, “I have thrown it away because I told him not to use it, but he has not stopped using it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade us to wear clothes of silk or Dibaj, and to drink in gold or silver utensils, and said, ‘These things are for them (unbelievers) in this world and for you (Muslims) in the Hereafter.’ “

Narrated Hudhaifa:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Do not drink in gold or silver utensils, and do not wear clothes of silk or Dibaj, for these things are for them (unbelievers) in this world and for you in the Hereafter.”

(the wife of the Prophet) Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “He who drinks in silver utensils is only filling his abdomen with Hell Fire.”

Narrated Al-Bara’ bin Azib:
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) ordered us to do seven things and forbade us from seven. He ordered us to visit the sick, to follow funeral processions, to say to a sneezer, “May Allah bestow His Mercy on you,” if he says, “Praise be to Allah,” to accept invitations, to greet everybody, to help the oppressed, and to help others fulfill their oaths. He forbade us to wear gold rings, to drink in silver utensils, to use Mayathir (silken carpets placed on saddles), to wear Al-Qissi (a kind of silken cloth), to wear silk, Dibaj or Istabraq (two kinds of silk).

Narrated Um Al-Fadl:
The people were in doubt whether the Prophet (peace be upon him) was fasting on the Day of Arafat or not, so a wooden drinking vessel full of milk was sent to him, and he drank it.

Narrated Sahl bin Sa’d:
An Arab lady was mentioned to the Prophet (peace be upon him), so he asked Abu Usaid As-Sa’idi to send for her. She came and stayed in the castle of Bani Sa’ida. The Prophet (peace be upon him) came to her, and when he spoke, she said, “I seek refuge with Allah from you.” He said, “I grant you refuge from me.” They said to her, “Do you know who this is?” She said, “No.” They said, “This is Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) who has come to command your hand in marriage.” She said, “I am very unlucky to lose this chance.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions went to the shed of Bani Sa’ida and sat there. He said, “Give us water, O Sahl!” So I took out this drinking bowl and gave them water in it. Sahl later took out that same drinking bowl and we all drank from it. Later, Umar bin Abdul Aziz requested it from Sahl as a present, and he gave it to him.

Narrated Asim al-Ahwal:
I saw the drinking bowl of the Prophet (peace be upon him) with Anas bin Malik. It had been broken, and he had mended it with silver plates. That bowl was wide and made of Nadar wood. Anas said, “I gave water to the Prophet (peace be upon him) in that bowl many times.” Ibn Seereen said: Around that bowl there was an iron ring, and Anas wanted to replace it with a silver or gold ring, but Abu Talha said to him, “Do not change a thing that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) has made.” So Anas left it as it was.
Chapter: To drink blessed water; and the blessed water

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah:
I was with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the time for the Asr prayer became due. We had no water except a little, which was put in a vessel and brought to the Prophet (peace be upon him). He put his hand into it, spread out his fingers, and said, “Come along! Hurry up! All those who want to perform ablution. The blessing is from Allah.” I saw water gushing out from between his fingers. The people performed ablution and drank, and I drank as much as I could, knowing it was a blessing. I asked Jabir, “How many were you then?” He replied, “We were one thousand four hundred men.” Salim said: Jabir said, “Fifteen hundred.”
