Chapter: 25 The building of the Ka’bah
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3829
Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah: When the Ka‘ba was rebuilt, the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Abbas went to carry stones. Abbas said to the Prophet (peace be upon him), “Put your waist sheet over your neck so that the stones may not hurt you.” But as soon as he took off his waist sheet, he fell unconscious on the ground with both his eyes towards the sky. When he came to his senses, he said, “My waist sheet! My waist sheet!” Then he tied his waist sheet around his waist.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3830
Narrated Amr bin Dinar and Ubaidullah bin Abi Yazid: In the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him) there was no wall around the Ka‘ba and the people used to pray around it until Umar became the Caliph and he built the wall around it. Ubaidullah further said, “Its wall was low, so Ibn Az-Zubair built it higher.”
Chapter:26 The days of Pre-Islamic Period of Ignorance
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3831
Narrated Aisha: Ashura (i.e. the tenth of Muharram) was a day on which the tribe of Quraish used to fast in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also used to fast on this day. So when he migrated to Medina, he fasted on it and ordered the Muslims to fast on it. When the fasting of Ramadan was enjoined, it became optional for the people to fast or not to fast on the day of Ashura.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3832
Narrated Ibn Abbas: The people used to consider the performance of Umra in the months of Hajj an evil deed on the earth, and they used to call the month of Muharram as Safar and used to say, “When the wounds on the backs of the camels have healed and the footmarks of the camels have vanished after coming from Hajj, then Umra becomes legal for the one who wants to perform Umra.” Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and his companions reached Mecca assuming Ihram for Hajj on the fourth of Dhul-Hijja. The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered his companions to perform Umra with that Ihram instead of Hajj. They asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! What kind of finishing of Ihram?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Finish the Ihram completely.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3833
Narrated Sa‘id bin Al-Musaiyab’s grandfather: In the pre-Islamic period of ignorance a flood of rain came and filled the valley in between the two mountains around the Ka‘ba.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3834
Narrated Qais bin Abi Hazim: Abu Bakr went to a lady from the Ahmas tribe called Zainab bint Al-Muhajir and found that she refused to speak. He asked, “Why does she not speak?” The people said, “She has intended to perform Hajj without speaking.” He said to her, “Speak, for it is illegal not to speak, as it is an action of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance.” So she spoke and said, “Who are you?” He said, “A man from the Emigrants.” She asked, “Which Emigrants?” He replied, “From Quraish.” She asked, “From what branch of Quraish are you?” He said, “You ask too many questions; I am Abu Bakr.” She said, “How long shall we enjoy this good order, i.e. Islamic religion, which Allah has brought after the period of ignorance?” He said, “You will enjoy it as long as your Imams keep on abiding by its rules and regulations.” She asked, “What are the Imams?” He said, “Were there not heads and chiefs of your nation who used to order the people and they used to obey them?” She said, “Yes.” He said, “So they, i.e. the Imams, are those whom I meant.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3835
Narrated Aisha: A black slave woman of some of the Arabs embraced Islam and she had a hut in the mosque. She used to visit us and talk to us, and when she finished her talk, she used to say: “The day of the scarf was one of our Lord’s wonders: Verily! He has delivered me from the land of disbelief.” When she said the above many times, I (i.e. Aisha) asked her, “What was the day of the scarf?” She replied, “Once the daughter of some of my masters went out wearing a leather scarf around her neck, and the scarf fell from her. A kite descended and picked it up, mistaking it for a piece of meat. They, i.e. my masters, accused me of stealing it and they tortured me to such an extent that they even searched my private parts. So, while they all were around me, and I was in great distress, suddenly the kite came over our heads and threw the scarf, and they took it. I said to them: ‘This is what you accused me of stealing, though I was innocent.'”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3836
Narrated Ibn Umar: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “If anybody has to take an oath, he should swear only by Allah.” The people of Quraish used to swear by their fathers, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Do not swear by your fathers.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3837
Narrated Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Qasim: Al-Qasim used to walk in front of the funeral procession. He did not get up for the funeral procession when it passed by him. And he narrated from Aisha that she said, “The people of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance used to stand up for the funeral procession. When they saw it they used to say twice: ‘You were noble in your family. What are you now?'”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3838
Narrated Umar: The pagans used not to leave Jam‘ (i.e. Muzdalifa) till the sun had risen on Thabir mountain. The Prophet (peace be upon him) contradicted them by leaving Muzdalifa before the sun rose.

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3841
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The most true words said by a poet were the words of Labid: ‘Verily, everything except Allah is perishable.’ And Umaiya bin As-Salt was about to be a Muslim, but he did not embrace Islam.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3842
Narrated Aisha: Abu Bakr had a slave who used to give him some of his earnings. Abu Bakr used to eat from it. One day he brought something and Abu Bakr ate from it. The slave said to him, “Do you know what this is?” Abu Bakr then enquired, “What is it?” The slave said, “Once, in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance, I foretold somebody’s future though I did not know this knowledge of foretelling but I cheated him, and when he met me, he gave me something for that service, and that is what you have eaten from.” Then Abu Bakr put his hand in his mouth and vomited whatever was in his stomach.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3843
Narrated Ibn Umar: In the pre-Islamic period of ignorance the people used to bargain with the meat of camels on the principle of Habal-al-Habala, which meant the sale of a she-camel that would be born by a she-camel that had not yet been born. The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade them such a transaction.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3844
Narrated Ghailan bin Jarir: We used to visit Anas bin Malik and he used to talk to us about the Ansar, and used to say to me, “Your people did so-and-so on such-and-such a day, and your people did so-and-so on such-and-such a day.”
(3845) Chapter: Al-Qasama in the Pre-Islamic Period of Ignorance
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3845
Narrated Ibn Abbas: The first event of Qasama in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance was practiced by us, the Banu Hashim. A man from Banu Hashim was employed by a Quraishi man from another branch. The Hashimi laborer set out with the Quraishi, driving his camels. Another man from Banu Hashim passed by him whose bag’s leather rope had broken. He asked the laborer, “Will you help me by giving me a rope so I can tie my bag lest the camels run away?” The laborer gave him a rope, and he tied his bag. When the caravan halted, all the camels were tied except one. The employer asked, “Why has this camel not been tied?” He replied, “There is no rope for it.” The employer asked, “Where is its rope?” and struck the laborer with a stick that caused his death. Before dying, a man from Yemen passed by and the laborer said, “Will you attend the pilgrimage?” He replied, “Perhaps I will.” The dying laborer said, “Please convey a message for me once in your life.” The man agreed. The laborer instructed: “When you attend the pilgrimage, call the family of Quraish, then call the family of Banu Hashim, and then ask for Abu Talib. Tell him that so-and-so has killed me for a rope.” Then he expired.
When the employer returned to Mecca, Abu Talib asked him, “What happened to our companion?” He replied, “He became ill, I cared for him and buried him.” Abu Talib said, “He deserved that from you.” Later, the messenger arrived at pilgrimage season, called the families as instructed, and delivered the message to Abu Talib. Abu Talib confronted the killer and gave him three choices: “Either give us one hundred camels as blood-money, or fifty of your men swear you did not kill him, or we will kill you in retaliation.” The killer consulted his people, and they said they would swear. A woman from Banu Hashim, married among them, requested Abu Talib to excuse her son from the oath. Abu Talib agreed. Another man offered two camels in place of his oath, and Abu Talib accepted. Forty-eight men then took the oath. Ibn Abbas added: By Him in Whose Hand my life is, before the end of that year, none of those forty-eight men remained alive.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3846
Narrated Aisha: Allah caused the day of Buath to take place before Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) was sent as a Messenger, so that when Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) reached Medina, those people had already been divided into groups and their chiefs had been killed or wounded. Thus Allah made that day precede the coming of His Messenger (peace be upon him) so that the Ansar might embrace Islam.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3847
Narrated Ibn Abbas: To run along the valley between the two green pillars of Safa and Marwa was not Sunnah, but the people in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance used to do so, saying: “We do not cross this stream except running strongly.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3848
Narrated Abu As-Safar: I heard Ibn Abbas saying, “O people! Listen to what I say, and let me hear what you say, and do not go away saying, ‘Ibn Abbas said such and such.’ Whoever wants to perform Tawaf around the Ka‘ba should go behind Al-Hijr (the unroofed portion of the Ka‘ba) and do not call it Al-Hatim, for in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance, when a man took an oath, he would throw his whip, shoes, or bow into it.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3849
Narrated Amr bin Maimun: During the pre-Islamic period of ignorance, I saw a she-monkey surrounded by many monkeys. They were stoning it because it had committed illegal sexual intercourse, and I stoned it along with them.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3850
Narrated Sufyan: Ubaidullah said, “I heard Ibn Abbas saying, ‘Following are some traits of the people of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance: (i) defaming the ancestry of other families, (ii) wailing over the dead.’ Ubaidullah forgot the third trait.” Sufyan added, “They say the third was to believe that rain was caused by the influence of stars.”
Chapter: 28 The advent of the Prophet (peace be upon him)
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3851
Ibn Abbas reported that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) was divinely inspired at the age of forty. He stayed in Mecca for thirteen years, then was ordered to migrate to Medina, where he remained for ten years before he passed away.
Chapter: 29 The troubles which the Mushrikun caused
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3852
Khabbab reported: I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) while he was reclining on his cloak in the shade of the Ka‘ba. We were suffering greatly from the pagans, so I said, “Will you invoke Allah for us?” He sat up, his face red, and said: “Among those before you, a believer would be combed with iron combs, removing his flesh from his bones, yet this would not turn him away from his religion. A saw might be placed on his head and split him into two parts, yet this would not turn him away from his religion. By Allah, this matter will be completed until a traveler will go from Sana to Hadramaut fearing none but Allah.” (The sub-narrator Baiyan added: “Or the wolf, lest it should harm his sheep.”)
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3853
Abdullah reported: The Prophet (peace be upon him) recited Surah An-Najm and prostrated, and everyone present also prostrated except one man who took a handful of pebbles, lifted them, and prostrated on them saying, “This is sufficient for me.” Later, I saw that same man killed as a disbeliever.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3854
Abdullah reported: While the Prophet (peace be upon him) was prostrating and surrounded by some of the Quraysh, Uqba bin Abi Mu‘ait brought the intestines of a camel and placed them on the Prophet’s back. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not raise his head until Fatima came, removed them from his back, and invoked curses upon the one who did this. The Prophet (peace be upon him) then supplicated: “O Allah! Destroy the chiefs of Quraysh: Abu Jahl bin Hisham, Utba bin Rabi‘a, Shayba bin Rabi‘a, Umayya bin Khalaf or Ubai bin Khalaf.” (The sub-narrator Shu‘ba was unsure about the last name.) Abdullah added: I later saw these men killed on the Day of Badr and thrown into the well, except for Umayya or Ubai whose body was mutilated and not thrown into the well.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3855
Sa‘id bin Jubair reported: AbdurRahman bin Abza told me, “Ask Ibn Abbas about these two Qur’anic verses: ‘Nor kill the soul which Allah has made sacred except by right’ (25:68), and, ‘Whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell’ (4:93).” So I asked Ibn Abbas. He said: “When the verse in Surah Al-Furqan was revealed, the pagans of Mecca said, ‘But we have killed those lives Allah has made sacred, invoked others besides Allah, and committed fornication.’ So Allah revealed: ‘Except those who repent, believe, and do good deeds…’ (25:70). This verse concerned those people. As for the verse in Surah An-Nisa (4:93), it refers to a man who embraces Islam, understands its laws and obligations, then murders someone; his recompense is Hellfire forever.” I mentioned this to Mujahid who said: “Except the one who repents.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3856
Urwa bin Az-Zubair reported: I asked Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-As, “Tell me the worst thing the pagans did to the Prophet (peace be upon him).” He said: “While the Prophet (peace be upon him) was praying in the Hijr of the Ka‘ba, Uqba bin Abi Mu‘ait came and placed his garment around the Prophet’s neck and strangled him severely. Then Abu Bakr came, grabbed Uqba by his shoulder, pushed him away, and said: ‘Do you want to kill a man simply because he says, My Lord is Allah?’”
Chapter: 30 The conversion of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to Islam
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3857
Ammar bin Yasir reported: I saw Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), and the only converts with him were five slaves, two women, and Abu Bakr.
Chapter: 31 The conversion of Sa‘d (may Allah be pleased with him) to Islam
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3858
Sa‘d bin Abi Waqqas reported: None embraced Islam except on the day I embraced it. And for seven days, I was one of the three persons who were Muslims, making up one-third of Islam.
Chapter: 32 About the Jinn
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3859
Abdur-Rahman reported: I asked Masruq, “Who informed the Prophet (peace be upon him) about the Jinns on the night when they heard the Qur’an?” He said, “Your father Abdullah informed me that a tree informed the Prophet (peace be upon him) about them.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3860
Abu Huraira reported: I was once in the company of the Prophet (peace be upon him) carrying a water pot for his ablution and for cleaning his private parts. While following him with the pot, the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, “Who is this?” I said, “I am Abu Huraira.” He said, “Bring me stones to clean myself, but do not bring me bones or animal dung.” So I brought some stones, carrying them in the corner of my robe, placed them by his side, and left. When he finished, I walked with him and asked, “What about bones and animal dung?” He replied, “They are the food of the Jinn. The delegation of the Jinn of Nasibin came to me—and how good those Jinn were—and they asked me for provision. I prayed to Allah for them that whenever they pass by bones or dung, they will find food upon it.”
Chapter:33 The conversion of Abu Dhar (may Allah be pleased with him) to Islam
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3861
Ibn Abbas reported: When Abu Dhar received the news of the Prophet’s advent (peace be upon him), he said to his brother, “Ride to the valley of Mecca and try to find out the truth of the man who claims to be a prophet, who is informed of the news of Heaven. Listen to what he says and then come back to me.” His brother went, listened to some of the Prophet’s talks, and returned saying, “I have seen him enjoining virtuous behavior and saying something that is not poetry.” Abu Dhar replied, “You have not satisfied me.” So he himself took some food and water and set out for Mecca. He went to the Mosque searching for the Prophet but did not know him, and he disliked asking anyone about him. When part of the night had passed, Ali saw him and recognized he was a stranger. Abu Dhar followed Ali, but neither asked the other anything. At dawn, Abu Dhar returned to the Mosque, spending the day there unseen by the Prophet, then went back. This continued for three days, until Ali finally asked him what had brought him there. Abu Dhar said, “If you give me a firm promise that you will guide me, I will tell you.” Ali promised, and Abu Dhar explained his search. Ali said, “It is true, he is the Messenger of Allah. Tomorrow, follow me, and if I see danger I will act as if relieving myself, but if I continue, then follow me into the place I enter.” The next morning, Abu Dhar followed Ali until they both entered upon the Prophet, and Abu Dhar listened to him and embraced Islam on the spot. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Go back to your people and inform them until my order reaches you.” Abu Dhar replied, “By Him in Whose Hand is my life, I will proclaim it openly among them.” He then went to the Mosque and declared aloud, “I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” The people beat him until he fell, then Al-Abbas came and shielded him saying, “Woe to you! Do you not know he is from Ghifar and your trade route to Syria passes through them?” So they let him go. The next day Abu Dhar did the same, and again they beat him, but Al-Abbas again protected him.
Chapter: 34 The conversion of Sa‘id bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) to Islam
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3862
Qais reported: I heard Sa‘id bin Zaid bin Amr bin Nufail saying in the mosque of Kufa, “By Allah, I saw myself tied and forced by Umar to abandon Islam before Umar himself had embraced Islam. And if the mountain of Uhud could move from its place for the evil you people have done to Uthman, it would indeed have the right to move.”
Chapter: 35 The conversion of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to Islam
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3863
Abdullah bin Mas‘ud reported: We remained powerful and honorable since Umar embraced Islam.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3864
Abdullah bin Umar reported: While Umar was in his house in fear, Al-‘As bin Wail As-Sahmi, Abu Amr, came to him wearing an embroidered cloak with silk hems. He belonged to the tribe of Bani Sahm, our allies in the pre-Islamic era. Al-‘As asked, “What is wrong with you?” Umar said, “Your people claim they will kill me if I become a Muslim.” Al-‘As said, “No one will harm you after I have granted you protection.” He then went out and met people gathered in the valley who said, “We are going to Ibn Al-Khattab, who has embraced Islam.” Al-‘As said, “There is no way to reach him.” So the people dispersed.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3865
Abdullah bin Umar reported: When Umar embraced Islam, all the people gathered around his house saying, “Umar has embraced Islam!” I was a boy and on the roof of my house when a man wearing a silk cloak said, “Umar has embraced Islam, and nobody can harm him, for I am his protector.” I saw the people retreat from Umar, and when I asked who the man was, they said, “It was Al-‘As bin Wail.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3866
Abdullah bin Umar reported: I never heard Umar say about something he thought would be a certain way except that it turned out as he thought. Once, while he was sitting, a handsome man passed by. Umar said, “If I am not mistaken, this man is still on the religion of the pre-Islamic period, or he was their soothsayer. Call him to me.” The man was brought, and Umar told him his thought. The man replied, “I have never seen such a day when a Muslim is accused like this.” Umar said, “You must tell me the truth.” He said, “I was their soothsayer in the pre-Islamic period.” Umar asked, “Tell me the most astonishing thing your Jinn told you.” The man said, “One day while I was in the market, she came to me frightened and said: ‘Have you not seen the Jinn, their despair, their defeat, and how they now follow only camel riders?’” Umar said, “He is right. One day when I was near their idols, a man brought a calf and slaughtered it. Then an unseen voice shouted harshly: ‘O bold evildoer! A matter of success! A clear man is declaring: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah.’ The people fled, but I stayed until it came again: ‘O bold evildoer! A matter of success! A clear man is declaring: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah.’ Then I left, and shortly afterward, it was said that a prophet had appeared.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3867
Sahih al-Bukhari 3867
Qais reported: I heard Sa‘id bin Zaid say to the people, “If you had seen me and Umar’s sister tied and forced by him to leave Islam, while he himself had not yet embraced Islam… And if the mountain of Uhud could collapse for the evil you people have done to Uthman, it would surely deserve to collapse.”
Chapter: 36 The splitting of the moon (into two pieces)
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3868

Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3872
Narrated Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “I have been shown the place of your emigration, a land of date-palm trees situated between two mountains.” So some emigrated towards Al-Madina, and all those people who had emigrated to Ethiopia returned to Al-Madina. This is also reported from Abu Musa and Asma about the Prophet (peace be upon him).
Narrated Ubaidullah bin Adi bin Al-Khiyar: Al-Miswar bin Makhrama and Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Aswad bin Abu Yaghuth said to him, “What prevents you from speaking to your uncle Uthman regarding his brother Al-Walid bin Uqba?” The people were criticizing him for what he had done. Ubaidullah said, “I waited for Uthman, and when he went out for prayer, I said, ‘I have something to say to you as advice.’ Uthman said, ‘O man! I seek refuge with Allah from you.’ So I left. After the prayer, I told Al-Miswar and Ibn Abu Yaghuth what happened. They said, ‘You have done your duty.’ Then Uthman’s messenger summoned me. Uthman asked, ‘What is your advice?’ I testified and said, ‘Allah sent Muhammad and revealed the Qur’an to him. You responded to Allah and His Messenger, had faith, and took part in the first two migrations to Ethiopia and Medina. You enjoyed the company of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and learned from him. Now people are talking about Al-Walid, and it is your duty to enforce the legal punishment.’ Uthman said, ‘O my nephew! Did you ever meet Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)?’ I said, ‘No, but his knowledge has reached me as it has reached the virgin in her seclusion.’ Uthman testified and said, ‘Allah sent Muhammad with the truth, revealed the Book to him, and I believed and migrated twice, as you said. I pledged allegiance to him, never disobeyed or cheated him until Allah caused him to die. Then Abu Bakr became Caliph, and I was never disobedient to him. Then Umar became Caliph, and I was never disobedient to him. Then I became Caliph. Do I not have the same rights over you as they had?’ I replied, ‘Yes.’ Uthman said, ‘Then what are these things I hear from you? As for Al-Walid, by Allah, I shall give him the legal punishment justly.’ Then Uthman ordered that Al-Walid be flogged forty lashes. He ordered Ali to flog him, and he himself participated in flogging him.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3873
Narrated Aisha: Umm Habiba and Umm Salama mentioned a church they had seen in Ethiopia in which there were pictures. When they told the Prophet (peace be upon him), he said, “Those people are such that if a pious man among them died, they would build a place of worship over his grave and decorate it with pictures. Such people will be Allah’s worst creatures on the Day of Resurrection.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3874
Narrated Umm Khalid bint Khalid: When I came from Ethiopia to Medina, I was a young girl. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) clothed me with a sheet that had designs on it. He touched the marks with his hands and said, “Sanah! Sanah!” meaning, “Good, good.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3875
Narrated Abdullah: We used to greet the Prophet (peace be upon him) while he was in prayer, and he would return our greetings. But when we returned from Najashi, we greeted him while he was praying, and he did not reply. We said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! We used to greet you and you would reply to us.” He said, “Verily, in prayer there is enough occupation.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3876
Narrated Abu Musa: We received the news of the Prophet’s departure to Medina while we were in Yemen. We boarded a ship, but it carried us to An-Najashi in Ethiopia, where we met Ja‘far bin Abi Talib and stayed with him until we came to Medina when the Prophet (peace be upon him) had already conquered Khaibar. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “O people of the ship! You will have two migrations.”

Chapter: 44 The story of Abu Talib
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3883
Narrated Al-Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib: He said to the Prophet (peace be upon him), “You have not been of any avail to your uncle Abu Talib, though by Allah, he used to protect you and used to become angry on your behalf.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “He is in a shallow fire, and had it not been for me, he would have been in the bottom of the Hellfire.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3884
Narrated Al-Musaiyab: When Abu Talib was on his death bed, the Prophet (peace be upon him) went to him while Abu Jahl was sitting beside him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “O my uncle! Say: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, an expression I will defend your case with before Allah.” Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Umaiya said, “O Abu Talib! Will you leave the religion of Abdul Muttalib?” They kept on saying this to him until the last statement he said was, “I am on the religion of Abdul Muttalib.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “I will keep on asking Allah’s forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden to do so.” Then the following verse was revealed: “It is not fitting for the Prophet and the believers to ask Allah’s forgiveness for the pagans, even if they were their near relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are the dwellers of the Hellfire.” (9:113). Another verse was also revealed: “Verily, you guide not whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills.” (28:56).
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3885
Narrated Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri: He heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) when somebody mentioned his uncle Abu Talib, saying, “Perhaps my intercession will be helpful to him on the Day of Resurrection so that he may be put in a shallow fire reaching only up to his ankles. His brain will boil from it.” Narrated Yazid: using the words “will make his brain boil.”
Chapter: 41 The narration about Al-Isra (Journey by Night)
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3886
Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah: He heard Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) saying, “When the people of Quraish did not believe me regarding the story of my Night Journey, I stood up in Al-Hijr and Allah displayed Jerusalem in front of me, and I began describing it to them while I was looking at it.”
Chapter:42 Al-Mi’raj
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3887
Narrated Anas bin Malik: Malik bin Sasaa said that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) described to them his Night Journey saying, “While I was lying in Al-Hatim or Al-Hijr, suddenly someone came to me and cut my body open from here to here.” I asked Al-Jarud who was by my side, “What does he mean?” He said, “It means from his throat to his pubic area,” or said, “From the top of the chest.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) further said, “He then took out my heart. Then a gold tray of Belief was brought to me and my heart was washed and was filled with Belief and then returned to its original place. Then a white animal which was smaller than a mule and bigger than a donkey was brought to me.” On this Al-Jarud asked, “Was it the Buraq, O Abu Hamza?” I (i.e. Anas) replied in the affirmative. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The animal’s step was so wide that it reached the farthest point within the reach of its sight. I was carried on it, and Gabriel set out with me till we reached the nearest heaven. When he asked for the gate to be opened, it was asked, ‘Who is it?’ Gabriel answered, ‘Gabriel.’ It was asked, ‘Who is accompanying you?’ Gabriel replied, ‘Muhammad.’ It was asked, ‘Has Muhammad been called?’ Gabriel replied in the affirmative. Then it was said, ‘He is welcomed. What an excellent visit this is!’ The gate was opened, and when I went over the first heaven, I saw Adam there. Gabriel said, ‘This is your father, Adam; pay him your greetings.’ So I greeted him and he returned the greeting to me and said, ‘You are welcomed, O pious son and pious Prophet.’
Then Gabriel ascended with me till we reached the second heaven. When I went over it, I saw John (Yahya) and Jesus (`Isa), who were cousins. Gabriel said, ‘These are John and Jesus; pay them your greetings.’ So I greeted them and both of them returned my greetings and said, ‘You are welcomed, O pious brother and pious Prophet.’ Then Gabriel ascended with me to the third heaven and when I went over it, I saw Joseph (Yusuf). Gabriel said, ‘This is Joseph; pay him your greetings.’ So I greeted him and he replied, ‘You are welcomed, O pious brother and pious Prophet.’ Then Gabriel ascended with me to the fourth heaven, and when I went over it, I saw Idris. Gabriel said, ‘This is Idris; pay him your greetings.’ So I greeted him and he replied, ‘You are welcomed, O pious brother and pious Prophet.’
Then Gabriel ascended with me to the fifth heaven, and when I went over it, I saw Aaron (Harun). Gabriel said, ‘This is Aaron; pay him your greetings.’ So I greeted him and he replied, ‘You are welcomed, O pious brother and pious Prophet.’ Then Gabriel ascended with me to the sixth heaven, and when I went over it, I saw Moses (Musa). Gabriel said, ‘This is Moses; pay him your greetings.’ So I greeted him and he replied, ‘You are welcomed, O pious brother and pious Prophet.’ When I left him, he wept. Someone asked him, ‘What makes you weep?’ He said, ‘I weep because after me a young man has been sent as a Prophet, whose followers will enter Paradise in greater numbers than my followers.’
Then Gabriel ascended with me to the seventh heaven, and when I went over it, I saw Abraham (Ibrahim). Gabriel said, ‘This is your father; pay him your greetings.’ So I greeted him and he replied, ‘You are welcomed, O pious son and pious Prophet.’ Then I was made to ascend to Sidrat-ul-Muntaha (the Lote Tree of the utmost boundary). Behold! Its fruits were like the jars of Hajr and its leaves were as big as the ears of elephants. Gabriel said, ‘This is the Lote Tree of the utmost boundary.’ Behold! Four rivers ran underneath, two hidden and two visible. I asked, ‘What are these rivers, O Gabriel?’ He replied, ‘As for the hidden ones, they are two rivers in Paradise, and the visible ones are the Nile and the Euphrates.’ Then Al-Bait-ul-Ma’mur (the Sacred House) was shown to me and a container full of wine, another full of milk, and a third full of honey were brought to me. I took the milk. Gabriel remarked, ‘This is the Islamic religion which you and your followers are upon.’
Then fifty prayers were enjoined on me every day. When I returned, I passed by Moses who asked me, ‘What have you been ordered to do?’ I replied, ‘Fifty prayers a day.’ Moses said, ‘Your followers cannot bear fifty prayers a day, and by Allah, I have tested people before you. Go back to your Lord and ask for reduction.’ So I went back, and Allah reduced ten prayers. Again I came to Moses, but he repeated the same, so I went back and Allah reduced ten more. This continued until Allah ordered me to observe five prayers a day. When I came back to Moses, he said, ‘Your followers cannot bear five prayers a day; go back to your Lord and ask for further reduction.’ I said, ‘I have requested so much of my Lord that I feel ashamed, but I am satisfied now and surrender to Allah’s Order.’ When I left, I heard a voice saying, ‘I have decreed My Order and lessened the burden of My worshipers.’
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3888
Narrated Ibn Abbas: Regarding the statement of Allah: “And We granted the vision (Ascension to the heavens) which We made you see (as an actual eyewitness) was only made as a trial for the people” (17:60). Ibn Abbas added: The sights which Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) was shown on the Night Journey when he was taken to Bait-ul-Maqdis (Jerusalem) were actual sights, not dreams. And the Cursed Tree mentioned in the Qur’an is the tree of Zaqqum itself.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3889
Narrated Abdullah bin Ka
b: I heard Kab bin Malik narrating: When he remained behind (i.e., did not join) the Prophet (peace be upon him) in the Ghazwa of Tabuk. Ibn Bukair, in his narration, stated that Ka
b said, “I witnessed the Al-`Aqaba pledge of allegiance at night with the Prophet (peace be upon him), when we jointly agreed to support Islam with all our efforts. I would not like to have attended the Badr battle instead of that ‘Aqaba pledge although Badr is more well-known among the people.”
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3890
Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: I was present with my two maternal uncles at Al-`Aqaba (where the pledge of allegiance was given). Ibn ‘Uyaina said, “One of the two was Al-Bara’ bin Marur.”

Narrated ‘Ubada bin As-Samit: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), surrounded by a group of his companions, said, “Come along and give me the pledge of allegiance that you will not worship anything besides Allah, will not steal, will not commit illegal sexual intercourse, will not kill your children, will not utter slander invented by yourself, and will not disobey me if I order you to do something good. Whoever among you respects and fulfills this pledge will be rewarded by Allah. If one of you commits any of these sins and is punished in this world, then that will be his expiation. And if Allah screens his sin, then his matter will rest with Allah: if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will excuse him.” So I gave the pledge of allegiance to him under these conditions.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3893
Narrated ‘Ubada bin As-Samit: I was one of the Naqibs who gave the (‘Aqaba) Pledge of Allegiance to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him). We pledged that we would not worship anything other than Allah, would not steal, would not commit illegal sexual intercourse, would not kill a person whose killing Allah has made illegal except rightfully, would not rob each other. If we committed any of the above sins, Allah would give His judgment concerning it.
Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith Number 3894
Narrated Aisha: The Prophet (peace be upon him) engaged me when I was a girl of six years. We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell out. Later my hair grew again, and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted. She took my hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless, and when my breathing became normal, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There I saw some Ansari women who said, “Best wishes, Allah’s blessing, and good luck.” They prepared me for the marriage. Unexpectedly, Allah’s Apostle came to me in the forenoon, and my mother handed me over to him. I was nine years old at that time.
